CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois downed Indiana State by the score of 73-67 in front of 3,151 fans inside SIU Arena.
The Sycamores dropped to 11-6, 2-4 MVC while SIU improved to 6-11, 3-3 MVC.
Jake Odum recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead ISU. RJ Mahurin tied a career-high with 14 points while Jordan Printy and Myles Walker scored 10 each.
ISU hit 23-of-56 field goals (41.1 percent) and were 16-of-22 at the charity stripe (72.7 percent). The Salukis connected on 26-of-51 shots from the field (51.0 percent), including seven 3-pointers. The Sycamores owned a 34-32 advantage on the glass, while pulling down 13 offensive rebounds and converting them into 19 second chance points.
ISU quickly cut the SIU lead down to just six points a minute into the second half, before SIU ran it back it to nine points. The Sycamores then went on a run that featured jumpers by Jake Odum and Dwayne Lathan and then a pair of Myles Walker free throws with just under 16 minutes to go which cut the Saluki lead down to 47-42.
As the clock ticked near 15 minutes to go, the Sycamores got a defensive stop and RJ Mahurin converted on the offensive end to make it 47-44 -- the closest the Sycamores had been since early in the first half. The Sycamores had an open 3-pointer to knot the score after another defensive stop, but it rimmed out and Kendal Brown-Surles drained his second of the game to stretch the SIU lead back out to 50-44 with 14:06 remaining which forced a Sycamore timeout.
The Sycamores then got a Mahurin lay-up and a conventional 3-point play from Walker at the 12:38 mark to cut the Saluki cushion all the way down to 50-49. With 10 minutes to go, Indiana State made it all the way back to tie SIU on a pair of Odum free throws to knot the score at 54.
Mahurin continued his hot second half shooting at the seven minute mark when he hit a 3-pointer to answer one by the Salukis which tied the game for a second time at 57. Walker then answered a Seck lay-up with his own with 5:45 remaining as the game was knotted yet again at 59.
Southern Illinois scored six of the game's next seven points to take a 66-60 lead, but a Printy 3-pointer at the two minute mark cut the Saluki lead down to 66-63. After SIU scored at the death of the shot clock, Mahurin was fouled with 34 seconds left and hit 1-of-2 charity tosses to tie a career-high and cut the SIU lead down to 68-64.
Southern Illinois took a 5-0 lead in the contest before Carl Richard hit 1-of-2 free throws at the 18:10 mark to make it 5-1. After SIU's third 3-point field goal of the in the first four minutes staked them to a 13-5 advantage, the Sycamores rattled off the game's next five points on a pair of free throws by RJ Mahurin and then a triple for Lucas Eitel with 14:35 on the clock.
SIU would go on to hit a total of five 3-pointers in the first half, the final one by TJ Lindsay at the 2:31 mark to take a 39-26 advantage. Jordan Printy scored five straight points for the Sycamores over the final two minutes of the first half to cut the Saluki advantage down to 39-31 at the half.
Printy led ISU with seven points in the opening stanza, which saw the Sycamores hit 44.0 percent of their shots and grab 15 rebounds. SIU hit 53.8 percent of its shots in the first half, including 5-of-9 3-point attempts.
Southern Illinois was led in scoring by Mamadou Seck who scored 16 points.
Indiana State's three-game week concludes on Sunday, January 15 when the Sycamores host Wichita State at 8:05 p.m. (ET) inside Hulman Center. The game will be televised live on ESPNU/ESPN3.com. It will mark the first ESPN produced telecast of an Indiana State home game since 2002.
