Hanley, Malone Are Named To CoSIDA Academic All-DIstrict 5 First Team

NEW ORLEANS ? Indiana State seniors Kelsey Hanley and Allison Malone have been named to the capital One Academic All-District 5 team for women's track & field/cross country which was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Both are now eligible for selection to the All-American team which will be announced later this month.

 

Hanley (Arcadia, Ind.) has a 3.42 grade point average (GPA) while majoring in Safety Management at Indiana State and was recently named to the MVC Track & Field Scholar-Athlete team for the third straight year. She competes in the weight throw during the indoor season and in the hammer throw and discus during the outdoor season for the ISU women's track & field team.

 

The Sycamore senior advanced to her first NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships this year and will compete in the discus during the competition at Drake University next week. She earned First Team All-American recognition at the 2011 NCAA Division I Indoor Championship after placing seventh in the weight throw. It was Hanley's third trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships as she placed 13th in 2010 and 15th in 2009.

 

Hanley established the school record in the hammer throw at the 2011 MVC Outdoor Championships with a throw of 205'-4” (62.58 meters) and has the second best throw all-time in the discus at 172'-8” (52.63 meters) which she threw at the 2011 EIU Big Blue Classic. She has competed in the post-season three straight years but this is the first year she advanced to the NCAA Finals.

 

She was named to the 2009 All-Academic team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and is also a member of the MVC Honor Roll, Indiana State Student-Athlete team, and Indiana State Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

 

Malone (Rensselaer, Ind.) has a 3.81 GPA while majoring in History at Indiana State and was re3cently named to the MVC Track & Field Scholar-Athlete team for the second time. She was also named to the MVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete team for the second time last Fall.

 

The Indiana State senior became just the fourth runner in Indiana State history to finish second or better at the MVC Cross Country Championships as she ran the fifth best 5K time in school history (17:38) in finishing second at the 2011 MVC Championships. It was her second finish in the top 10 at the championships after a seventh place finish in 2009.

 

Malone is also a member of the MVC Honor Roll, Indiana State Student-Athlete team, and Indiana State Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

 

Student-athletes are nominated by current CoSIDA members. Voting for Academic All-District (First, Second and possible Third Team members are named) is done by current CoSIDA members. Those who obtain First Team All-District status move onto the national Academic All-America ballot; these national awards (First Team, Second Team, Third Team for each sport category) is voted upon by Academic All-America Committee members and current CoSIDA Board of Directors.
