ST. LOUIS -- Aaron Carter and Kelsie Cooley of Indiana State University have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Carter and Cooley were honored for their performance during the period of February 28-March 6.
Now in its 12th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A guard for the Indiana State men's basketball team, Carter, a senior from Cannelton, Indiana, averaged 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shot per game, as the Sycamores captured the 2011 State Farm MVC Championship crown on March 6.
Named to the State Farm MVC Championship All-Tournament Team, Carter, who has a 3.34 cumulative grade-point average in business marketing, collected 10 points, five boards, a blocked shot and a steal against Evansville on March 4. In the title game against Missouri State on March 6, he compiled 15 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
A forward for the Indiana State women's basketball team, Cooley, a senior from Dayton, Ohio, averaged 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds, as the Sycamores fell in road contests at league-champion UNI (73-46 on March 3) and at Bradley (77-69 on March 5).
Cooley, who has a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in management, scored a team-high 10 points and grabbed four boards at UNI. Versus Bradley, she collected 14 points, hauled in nine rebounds and played all 40 minutes.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
