Video streaming by UstreamNORMAL, Ill. - Indiana State used a 19-1 run over the final 10 minutes of Wednesday night's thrilling 56-46 victory over Illinois State in front of 4,039 fans at Redbird Arena.
Indiana State broke a five-game MVC losing streak to improve to 13-12, 8-6 MVC while the Redbirds fell to 11-14, 3-11 MVC. The Sycamores improved to a perfect 10-0 on the season when holding an opponent to 63 points or less and are now 10-2 when the Sycamore starters outscore their counterparts for the opposition.
The Sycamores created 21 Illinois State turnovers in the contest and scored 23 points off those miscues. ISU recorded 16 steals against the 'Birds, which is a Redbird Arena record by an opponent an just one shy of the overall record in the building.
Jake Odum paced the Sycamores with 13 points in the contest, hitting 4-of-9 shots from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Odum was 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game to help seal the victory. He tied a career-high with eight rebounds against the Redbirds.
Illinois State scored a bucket by Tony Lewis with 9:36 left and scored just one point the rest of the way on a free throw by Lewis with 1:27 remaining. ISU scored 19 points during that final stretch to finish the game on a 19-1 run.
The Redbirds cut into the Sycamores' 25-20 halftime lead with a 3-pointer by Alex Rubin just 20 seconds in the second half to make it 25-23. ISU got back-to-back baskets from Myles Walker and Carl Richard to stretch the lead out back out to 29-23 with 18:27 to go in the contest.
ISU lead 35-32 with 14:23 remaining on a lay-up by Jake Odum, but would not score again until the 10 minute mark on a basket by Walker which broke up a 10-0 Redbird run as they took a 43-35 lead with 10:15 left. RJ Mahurin took a bullet pass from Odum with 8:45 left which made it 45-39.
The Sycamores continue to work into the Redbird advantage with a pair of free throws by Aaron Carter with 7:43 which made it 45-41. RJ Mahurin then hit 4-of-5 free throws on the Sycamores' next two possessions to knot the score at 45. In fact, the Sycamores tied the score with seven consecutive free throws scored and made it a 9-0 run on a fast break field goal by Koang Duluony as the clock ticked near four minutes left for a 47-45 lead.
Indiana State scored 11 straight on a driving lay-up from Odum with 3:33 remaining to make it 49-45 an the cushion grew to 51-45 at the 1:47 mark on a short corner jumper by Aaron Carter to tie the Sycamores' largest lead of the game.
The Redbirds' broke an eight minute scoring drought when Tony Lewis hit 1-of-2 free throws to inch within 51-46 before Odum connected on 3-of-4 charity tosses over the next two possessions to stretch the lead out to 54-46 as the clock ticked under a minute. Carl Richard added two more free throws with 40 seconds remaining for the 56-46 victory.
Illinois State owned a narrow 17-16 lead over the Sycamores on a basket scored by Tony Lewis with 8:40 left to go in the opening stanza, but the Redbirds would go on to score just one more field goal before halftime. Jackie Carmichael scored that basket with 7:55 remaining on the clock to stretch the Redbird lead out to 19-16, but the Sycamores got a driving lay-up from Jake Odum two minutes later to trim the Illinois State cushion down to 19-18.
The Sycamores regained the lead on a 3-pointer by Jordan Printy with 3:29 on the clock as ISU went out in front 21-19. Illinois State got on more free throw the rest of the half, and the Sycamores posted two baskets by Dwayne Lathan to take a 25-20 advantage into the locker room..

Tony Lewis came off the bench to score 11 points while Alex Rubin had 10 for the Redbirds.
Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, February 12 when the Sycamores host Drake inside Hulman Center. Tip-off is set for 1:05 p.m. and it is Fan Appreciation Day. All tickets to both the men's game versus the Bulldogs and to the women's contest against Wichita State are complimentary.
