ST. LOUIS, MO. ? Sycamore sophomore Felisha Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week it was announced today by the conference office.
Johnson won her fifth straight weight throw event and also won the shot put at the DePauw Tiger Invitational on Saturday. She surpassed the automatic qualifying distance for the women's weight throw for the fourth time this season as she won the event by breaking her own school record with a throw of 74'-2.50” (22.62 meters), outdistancing teammate Kelsey Hanley who was second with a season best 66'-6.5” (20.33 meters).
The sophomore won the shot put with a heave of 50'-7.5” (15.43 meters) which was just two inches short of her personal best.
Johnson ranks third in the United States and is second among collegians in the weight throw. She is also second in the Missouri Valley Conference behind Southern Illinois senior Gwen Berry who threw 74'-6.25” (22.71 meters) at the Indiana Gladstein Invitational on Jan. 21 and is the top collegian in the nation.
She also ranks 32nd in the nation and third in the Valley in the shot put.
INDIANA STATE IN THE RANKINGS
The Indiana State women's track & field team dropped one spot to 35th in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) while the men dropped five spots to 74th. In the Great Lakes Region rankings, the Sycamore women moved up two spots to 11th while the men remained in the 11th spot.
