TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's basketball team set a school record with 52 free-throw attempts on Friday night, as the Sycamores used a 30-point advantage at the charity stripe to top the Southern Illinois Salukis, 93-57 inside Hulman Center in front of 3,678 fans.
With the win, ISU evens their overall record at 13-13, while improving their Missouri Valley Conference record to 7-8. SIU falls to 2-24 overall, 0-15 in league play. With Wichita State's victory at home over Creighton, the Sycamores remain in a tie for sixth place in the MVC standings with the Shockers.
After Southern Illinois hit the first basket of the game on a layup by freshman CiCi Shannon, Indiana State went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead with 15:10 remaining in the half. Junior Shannon Thomas capped the run on layup in the paint on a post-feed from sophomore Taylor Whitley.
The Sycamores would grab their largest lead of the half when sophomore Moriah Hodge knocked down a free-throw with 15 seconds left until the break, putting ISU in front by 26 points at 48-22.
In the first half, Thomas led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds while junior Deja Mattox added 13 points. Freshman Anna Munn tied Thomas with seven rebounds while Whitley dished out five assists. As a team, the Sycamores shot 48.1% (13-for-27) in the first half, including 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Sophomore Teri Oliver led the Salukis with 13 points.
Indiana State never took their collective foot off the gas pedal in the second half, never letting Southern Illinois getting closer than 25 points over the game's final 20 minutes.
Thomas led ISU on Friday, totaling 26 points, two shy of her career high, going 10-for-17 from field while also grabbing nine rebounds. Mattox (17), Munn (12) and senior Kelsie Cooley (11) all joined Thomas in double figures against SIU. Munn also set a career-high with eight rebounds. Whitley turned in an all-around effort, going for seven points, seven assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Junior Brittany Schoen knocked down three triples for nine points, while redshirt freshman Andrea Rademacher hit six of her eight free-throw attempts off the bench. All ten active members of the team played on Friday, with freshman Sadie Oyer adding three points and one block, Hodge hitting a pair of free-throws, and freshman Nikki Gunning dishing out one assist.
The Sycamores set a program record with 52 attempts at the charity stripe, topping the 48 trips that ISU had in 1982 against Illinois - Chicago and in 1986 against Western Illinois. For the game, ISU went 38-for-52 from the line, taking advantage of 33 fouls by the Salukis.
Oliver led the Salukis with 25 points, knocking down six 3-pointers while freshman Brooke LeMar totaled a game-high 10 assists.
ISU returns to Hulman Center on Sunday, playing their final game at home for the 2010-11 season when the Evansville Purple Aces come to Terre Haute. Tip-off is set for 2:05 p.m. with Senior Day festivities for ISU's lone senior, Kelsie Cooley, set for immediately following the completion of the game.
