TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Junior guard Dwayne Lathan's 25 points and 11 rebounds
proved not to be enough as the Sycamores (15-13, 10-6 MVC) fell to Morehead
State (21-8, 12-4 OVC) 71-65 in the annual ESPN Bracketbuster game.
The Sycamores got things going early with an ally-oop dunk
from freshman guard Jake Odum to Lathan. Odum then added a free throw on the
next possession and junior center Myles Walker hit a layup to give the
Sycamores a 5-0 lead to start the game.
The Eagles then went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-5 lead with
14:01 remaining in the first half.
The Eagles continued to stretch their lead as they pulled
out to their largest lead of the game of 12 at 23-11 with 6:43 left to go in
the first half.
The Sycamores responded, however, cutting the Eagles lead to
two with 3:40 to go in the half before heading into the locker room at halftime
trailing 31-26.
After halftime, the Eagles came out shooting with a pair of
made free throws and a layup to extend their lead to nine. The Sycamores once
again began to rally as they cut the lead to one over the next four minutes.
However, the Eagles extended their lead back to six but the
Sycamores were not through yet. The Sycamore made one final run to tie the game
at 46 with 10:31 remaining.
The Eagles once again found a stop and the Sycamores could
never close the gap as the Sycamores fell by a final score of 71-65.
Morehead State senior center Kenneth Faried also broke Tim
Duncan's NCAA career rebounding record.
The Sycamores out shot the Eagles in the second half with a
56.5 percent shooting percentage in the second half to the Eagles 34 percent.
Lathan led all scorers with 25 points and also had a double double
with 11 rebounds and four steals.
Junior guard Jordan Printy had 12 points for the Sycamores
off four 3-pointers and added two assists while senior guard Aaron Carter also
reached double figures with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Sycamores will return to action Tuesday when they Travel
to face Missouri Valley Conference rival Northern Iowa.
