The Indiana State men's basketball team (12-11, 7-5 MVC) couldn't get back to its winning ways Tuesday as they fell 70-54 to the Shockers of Wichita State (19-4, 10-2 MVC) at Hulman Center.
The Sycamores got things started with a jumper from junior forward Carl Richard. Both teams then traded baskets and the lead back and fourth until about six and and a half minutes into the game when Wichita State turned it over and Richard hit a jumper to put the Sycamores up by four at 13-9.
The Shockers responded and went on a 16-5 run to take a seven-point lead. The Sycamores cut into the Shocker lead and at halftime the Sycamores trailed the Shockers 31-28.
As a team in the first half the Sycamores shot 46 percent from the field.
After halftime the Shockers hit a 3-pointer to extend their lead to six at 34-28. The Sycamores couldn't keep the Shockers at bay as they extended their lead to 12 with just under nine minutes to play.
The Sycamores began to respond and went on a 10-2 run over the next 2:32 to cut the Shocker lead to four. The Sycamores couldn't get the edge though as the Shockers pulled back out to an 18 point lead with just over two minutes left in the game with an 18-6 run.
The Sycamores eventually fell to the Shockers 70-54 in front of 2,913 fans at Hulman Center.
With the loss the Sycamores fall to 12-10 overall and 7-5 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
As a team the Sycamores shot 36 percent from the floor and 41.7% from the game. The Shockers also outrebounded the Sycamores 32-25.
The Sycamores were led offensively by junior forward Carl Richard who had 12 points, four rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Jake Kelly also reached double figures for the Sycamores with 11 points and three assists.
The Sycamores will return to action Saturday when they travel to face the Bears of Missouri State.
