Sycamores Down No. 25 Vanderbilt On The Road Behind Mahurin's Career High 14 Points

NASHVILLE -- Indiana State used a 16-2 run over the final six and a half minutes to down No. 25 Vanderbilt by the score of 61-55 in front of 13,310 fans inside historic Memorial Gym.

The Sycamores improve to 8-2 on the season while Vanderbilt fell to 6-4. ISU's win over No. 25 Vanderbilt is its first over a nationally-ranked opponent since downing No. 14 Butler in December of 2006.

Additionally, the Sycamores had not downed a nationally-ranked opponent on the road since beating No. 15 Indiana on December 11, 1999 as part of the Indiana Classic in Bloomington.

The Sycamores were paced in the game by a career-high 14 points off the bench by sophomore RJ Mahurin. He hit 5-of-8 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range with two rebounds in 20 minutes.

Joining Mahurin in double figures scoring was Carl Richard and Jordan Printy with 11 each while Odum had 10.

The Sycamores used a pair of large runs to begin the game and to end which spurred them on to victory over Vanderbilt. ISU opened the game with a 16-4 spurt over the first eight minutes, which included 3-pointers by Carl Richard, Printy and Mahurin twice for the large early lead.

Vanderbilt battled back to lead 28-23 with just under two minutes remaining before the break but a second chance jumper by Mahurin as well as a Richard 3-pointer at the death of the shot clock off the assist from Mahurin evened the score at 28 heading the locker room.

ISU also raced out quick to to lead by as many as nine points early in the second half. The Sycamores got a jumper by McWhorter and then back-to-back treys from Richard and Printy for a 36-28 lead with 18:48 left in the contest. Odum hit a driving lay-up with just under 18 minutes left following a Vanderbilt free throw to give the Sycamores the 38-29 lead.

The Commodores would once against battle back and led 53-45 over Indiana State with 6:31 left on a conventional 3-point play by Lance Goulbourne. Dwayne Lathan answered on the next possession with a running jumper to make it 53-47 and then Printy connected on a 3-pointer with 5:06 on the clock to make it 53-50.

Myles Walker scored in the paint with 4:30 left to inch the Sycamores closer at 53-52. McWhorter hit a pair of free throws with 3:32 remaining as ISU retook the lead at 54-53. As the clock ticked under three minutes to go, Odum hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 55-53 lead and then Richard scored with 1:05 to go to make it 57-53.

Jeffery Taylor scored for Vanderbilt on a second chance opportunity with just under a minute to go to make it 57-55 in favor of the Trees but Odum sealed the win for the Sycamores with a jumper at the 16 second mark to give ISU a 59-55 cushion. Odum added a pair of free throws with four seconds left for the 61-55 victory and capped the game ending 16-2 Sycamore run.

With the victory and holding Vanderbilt to 55 points, the Sycamores improved to 21-0 under second-year head coach Greg Lansing when holding teams to 63 points or less. ISU hit 43.1 percent of their shots from the field (22-of-51), including 47.6 percent from 3-point range (10-of-21). The Sycamores have connected on at least 10 3-point field goals in three of the last four games.

Taylor led Vanderbilt with 21 points.

Indiana State returns to action on Wednesday, December 21 when the Sycamores host Louisiana-Monroe. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. (ET).
