LAKE BEUNA VISTA, Fla. -- Indiana State sophomore guard Jake Odum posted the first triple-double at Indiana State since Larry Bird had one in 1979 as the Sycamores were able to hold on for a 72-66 victory over Fairfield in the consolation contest of the 2011 Old Spice Classic held at the HP Field House on the campus of the Walt Disney World Resort.
ISU improved to 6-1 on the season, while Fairfield dropped to 3-4. The Sycamores concluded their run in the Old Spice Classic with a 2-1 record.
Jake Odum finished the game with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists, which marked the first time an Indiana State player recorded a triple-double since Larry Bird had 33 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on February 20, 1979 against Drake. It also was the first time a Sycamore had double digits assists since Michael Menser had 11 against Wichita State on January 14, 2001. Those 12 assists are a new Old Spice Classic single-game record, previously held by Manny Harris of Michigan against fellow MVC member Creighton in 2009.
Walker finished the game with 16 points, a new career-high. ISU put five players in double figures scoring as Dwayne Lathan also posted 16 and Printy as well as Mahurin and Odum scored 10 each to join Walker. Mahurin has now reached double figures scoring in each of the last four games, including all three contests the Sycamores played as part of the Old Spice Classic.
Jordan Printy, fresh off hitting four 3-pointers in the semifinal contest against Minnesota, hit his first attempt from long range against Fairfield in a shot that used the front and back of the rim as well as the backboard to stake ISU to a 3-0 lead one minute in.

The Sycamores broke the tie and went on a 8-0 run to take a 22-14 lead. Walker started the spurt with back-to-back baskets and then Steve McWhorter made it 20-14 at the 9:10 mark off a pretty bounce pass from Odum. The Sycamore run was capped by a thunderous dunk from Dwayne Lathan off the feed from Odum for a 24-16 cushion with 7:52 left in the opening stanza.
The Sycamore lead was trimmed to 26-20 on four consecutive points by Fairfield until the 4:53 mark when Justin Gant stepped out to a triple which gave ISU a 29-20 lead. Steve McWhorter followed that up with a trey of his own with 4:23 left in the first half to make it 32-20.
Mahurin scored on a hook shot to give the Sycamores a 36-23 lead at the two minute mark. Fairfield answered with a 3-pointer to cut the lead down to 10 points and the first half scoring closed with another Mahurin bucket from Gant with a minute left for 38-26 lead.
ISU extended its lead out to 41-26 less than a minute into the second half, when Printy knocked down his second 3-pointer of the game. After Fairfield cut it down to 45-31, Walker scored his 12th point of the game on a turnaround jump shot with 15:31 left to give the Sycamores a 47-31 advantage.
Walker hit two free throws with 11:05 to go to give ISU a 55-35 lead over Fairfield. The charity tosses gave him 16 points, which are a new career high. Mahurin hit a 3-pointer to give the Sycamores a 58-35 lead with 9:47 to go and then Odum found Printy open at the basket for a lay-up to extend the ISU advantage out to 60-37. That assist gave Printy 11 for the game, which tied the Old Spice Classic record for a single-game.
Fairfield responded to the Sycamores' dominance in the first portion of the second half, by going on a 9-0 run to cut the ISU lead down to 60-46 with seven minutes remaining. With 6:19 left, Odum drilled a pair of free throws to stop the bleeding and expand the ISU lead out to 62-46. Fairfield then scored the game's next six points to get within 62-52, but Odum hit a free throw to give the Sycamores a 63-52 lead with 4:15 to go.

Following a turnover, Fairfield hit a pair of free throws to make it 63-56 in favor of ISU with just under three minutes to go. Fairfield hit another free throw with 1:48 to go to cut the lead down to 63-57.
The Sycamore broke their field goal drought on a breakaway dunk by Lathan with 1:30 to go to strech the lead back out to 64-57 and then Odum added a free throw with 1:15 left to give ISU a 66-57 cushion.
Fairfield cut the Sycamore lead down to 67-62 on three free throws with 52 seconds left and Lathan was fouled with 45.2 seconds on the clock to send him to the line.
