TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Four high school seniors have announced their intention to join the Indiana State Sycamore volleyball team beginning with the 2012 season it was announced today by head coach Traci Dahl. Emily Barber (Indianapolis, Ind.), Erika Nord, Cassandra Willis, and Ashlen Buck have all indicated they will play for the Sycamores.
"I am extremely pleased to welcome the 2012 recruiting class to Indiana State and our volleyball family," Dahl said. "All of them are very intense competitors and very bright in the classroom. These young ladies will complement the ISU volleyball program and what we are doing here to be top contenders in one of the toughest volleyball conferences in the nation. I am pleased to welcome their families as well. We will be adding to the already great parent base that we have now."
Barber is a 6-foot-1 senior at Zionsville High School who will join her sister, Lindsey, as a member of the Sycamores after signing her National Letter of Intent earlier this month. Barber lettered in volleyball all four years at Zionsville and was a member of the Hoosier Crossroads Conference All-Conference Team.
"Barber will be a player that can play multiple positions as well as the back row," Dahl said. "I look to her as being a solid six rotation player for us in the future. She is very strong and will only get stronger once she is here. She competes to win."
The Indianapolis native has been a scholar-athlete all four years in high school and was named the Most Valuable Player on the team this past season along with being named to the Indianapolis Star 2011 Volleyball Team as an honorable mention. She was a member of the USA HP team in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
The daughter of Dawn Ayers, Barber plans to major in Biology at Indiana State with hopes of attending medical school and coach volleyball. She has three sisters, Lindsey, Stephanie and Meredith.
Nord is a 5-foot-9 senior at Portage Central High School in Kalamazoo, Mich., and signed her National Letter of Intent earlier this month. She lettered in volleyball three seasons at Portage Central where she was All-Conference in 2010 and 2011, All-Region in 2009, 2010 and 2011, All-State in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and Academic All-State in 2011.
"Nord has been setting for a top club team and has good competitive club experience to bring to ISU," Dahl said. "She is a setter who can attack as well which will add to the diversity of her game. She is hard for the competition to read and has great court sense."
She established several records at Portage Central including recording 3,370 career assists. She had 1,027 assists, 284 digs, team leading 48 aces, and 110 kills during her senior season.
The daughter of Erick and Allison Nord, the Portage Central senior has played with Cassandra Willis for two years and played in the state finals as a sophomore. Her mother, Allison, played volleyball at Grand Valley from 1985-1989 while her father, Erik, played baseball and basketball at Kellogg Community College and at Aquinas from 1984-1988. Nord plans to major in Chemistry at Indiana State. She also has a sister, Andrea.
Willis is a 6-foot-2 senior at Lawton High School in Lawton, Mich., and signed her National Letter of Intent to play at Indiana State earlier this month. She is a multi-sport athlete having lettered four years in volleyball, four years in basketball and three years in track.
"Willis is a very strong, athletic middle blocker who is very intense when she plays," Dahl said. "She is capable of swinging in all positions but will mainly focus in the middle. Willis is an excellent blocker as well as hitter and possesses a strong presence at the net. She is fearless on the court and her energy is contagious."
Willis was named First Team All-Conference three straight years after being an honorable mention selection as a freshman. She was also named to the All-Region team, All-Area Team for Class C-D, Player of the Year in Class C-D as a junior by the Kalamazoo Gazette, and All-Courier Volleyball Team. She is also an All-Academic Team selection and has received several individual awards in volleyball including the "Most Dominating Player Award," "Best Blocker Award," and "Most Intimidating Player."
She has made the All-Conference First Team in basketball twice, All-Area for Class C-D, and was an All-State honorable mention the past two seasons. In track, she competed in the pole vault at the state meet as a freshman, and competed in discus, shot put and pole vault at the regional as a sophomore and junior.
During her high school career, Willis had 1,190 kills, 85 assists, 126 aces, 768 digs, and 235 blocks.
The daughter of Rob and April Willis, the Lawton High School senior plans to major in Forensic Anthropology at Indiana State. She has a brother, Anthony Baushke, and a sister, Chelsea Willis.
Buck is a 5'-foot'4" senior from Northview High School in Brazil, Ind., who has lettered all four years in volleyball and was a member of the 2011 Indiana North/South All-Stars.
"Buck comes to us locally from Brazil, Ind.," Dahl said. "She is going to have an immediate impact on the ISU defense and passing system. She has great ball control and will complement our defensive players."
The Northview senior is a four-time all-conference selection, two-time Most Valuable Player and two-time team captain. She won the award for most digs four times and the Hustle Award four times. Buck set the school record for digs in a career with 2,344 and for aces in a career with 214.
The daughter of Tony and Denise Buck, the Northview student-athlete plans to major in Education at Indiana State with plans to become a teacher and perhaps a coach. She has a brother, Clayton.
