HAUTE, Ind. - The visiting University of Tennessee at
Chattanooga Lady Mocs closed out Friday's Preseason WNIT matchup on a 23-2 run
over the game's final six minutes of play en route to a 75-54 victory over the
Indiana State Sycamores in front of 771 inside Hulman Center.
The loss drops the Sycamores to 1-2 on the season, while the Lady Mocs improve
to 2-1.
It was a back-and-forth first half, as the lead changed hands five times and
sat level on four other occasions. ISU took their largest lead with 5:11
remaining in the first half, as a layup by senior Shannon Thomas closed out a
15-5 run and put ISU in front 25-17.
ISU took a four-point lead into the break, at 32-28. Senior Brittany Schoen led
the way with nine points, coming on a perfect 3-for-3 effort from long range.
Chattanooga came out of the halftime locker room with hot shooting, using an
8-0 run to take a 36-32 lead with 16:07 to play. The game swung back-and-forth
over the next 10 minutes before sitting tied at 52-52 on a jumper by senior Deja Mattox with 6:54 left.
That was when the Indiana State scoring drought began, as ISU scored just two
points for the remainder of the night as UTC pulled away. The Sycamores
combined to go 1-for-13 down the stretch while the Lady Mocs went 8-for-9 from
the field.
Schoen led the way on Friday, scoring 16 points on 6-for-16 shooting with four
3-pointers. Thomas recorded her 19
th career double-double in an
Indiana State uniform, adding 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Indiana State returns to the court inside Hulman Center on Tuesday night,
playing host to in-state rival IUPUI at 7:05 p.m.
