Sycamores Put Three In Double Figures In Season Opening Win Over Detroit 64-62

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.— Despite being out-rebounded 40-24, the Indiana State women's basketball team put three in double figures and got a season opening win in the first round of the WNIT over Detroit Mercy 64-62.

The Titans jumped out to an early three-point lead just two minutes into the game at 7-4. The Sycamore offense took then began to get into a rhythm and never trailed the rest of the game.

Two buckets by junior point gaurd Taylor Whitley and two triples by senior shooting guard Brittany Schoen opened up the Sycamore lead to 14-7 with 14 minutes to play in the half.

The Sycamores reached their largest lead of the game of 11 with 8:30 left in the first half as senior center Shannon Thomas hit a layup off an assist from senior forward Deja Mattox. The Sycamores continued to lead and took a 36-30 lead into the lockeroom. 

After the halftime break the Sycamore offense came out shooting and extended their lead to 11 on four occasions with the last one coming with 11:38 left to play in the game. The Titans used a strong rebounding effort to pull the game back with into reach as they kept the Sycamores from extending their lead beyond six points over the last 10 minutes of play.

The Titans hung around all the way down to the buzzer as the Sycamores gave the ball back to Detroit with just 14 seconds left in regulation while leading by only two at 64-62. The Sycamore defense held strong and did not let the Titans get a shot off, giving the Sycamores the 64-62 win in their season opener.

ISU put three in double figures, led by Whitley with 16 points and four assists. Joining Whitley in double figures was Thomas who had 15 points and six rebounds and Schoen who had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.

As a team the Sycamores shot 45 percent from the floor and 28 percent from long range. The Sycamores also scored 22 points off Detroit turnovers.

The Sycamores will continue their run through the WNIT tournament on Sunday when they travel to face No. 2 Notre Dame with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
