OMAHA, Neb. - Indiana State redshirt freshman scored a career-high 22 points as the Indiana State Sycamores fell at Creighton by the score of 83-69 in front of 16,044 fans at Qwest Center Omaha.
ISU dropped its third consecutive contest for the first time this season and fell to 12-10, 7-4 MVC while Creighton improved to 14-9, 6-5 MVC. The Sycamores have now lost 12 consecutive games at Creighton, which is the longest active losing skid for Indiana State on the road against a member of the MVC.
Odum scored his 22 points hitting a pair of 3-pointers and was 10-of-13 at the free throw line. Joining Odum in double figures scoring was Dwayne Lathan, who was 5-of-9 from the field and scored 16 points. Carl Richard and Aaron Carter failed to reach double figures scoring for the first time in the seven contests.
The Sycamores finished the game with a 37.5 percent mark from the field (21-of-56) , and hit a total of nine 3-pointers. Indiana State recorded 15 offensive rebounds and turned them into 17 second chance points.
ISU trimmed a 36-29 halftime deficit down to 36-32 in the first two minutes of the second half on a free throw by Carl Richard and a running lay-up for Jake Kelly. The 'Jays responded to the Sycamores opening spurt with a 7-0 run to their lead back out to double digits at 43-32.
Creighton eventually ran their lead out to a game-high 19 points when they took a 63-44 advantage with 8:37 left in the game. The Sycamores hit just five field goals through the first 14 minutes of the first half but stayed alive by 11 free throws. ISU got back-to-back 3-pointers from Odum and Lathan which cut the Bluejay lead down to 70-58 with 3:35 remaining.
After a Creighton free throw stretched the lead out to 71-58, Lathan got the Sycamores within 10 points at 71-61 with his second consecutive 3-pointer. Lathan then added two more points on free throws to make it 72-63 with 1:54 remaining.
Creighton withstood another relentless ISU rally but held on for the 83-69 victory.
The Sycamores went scoreless until the 16:42 mark in the contest when Myles Walker opened the ISU scoring with a lay-up. Walker's score cut the Creighton lead down to 6-2, but Creighton went on a 17-6 run over the next five minutes to take their largest lead of the first half at 23-8 with 11:59 remaining.
ISU broke the Creighton momentum with a pair of 3-pointers from freshman RJ Mahurin which made it 23-14 at the 10:55 mark. The Sycamores final bucket of the first half came on a 3-pointer from Odum with 2:18 left. Odum would go on to connect on three more free throws in the final minute and half of the opening stanza as ISU whittled the Bluejay advantage down to just 36-29 at the break.
Odum led the Sycamores with 10 points at the half as the Sycamores shot 39.3 percent from field before the break.
Indiana State returns to action on Tuesday, February 1 for Sycamore Pride Day against Wichita State.
