PEORIA, Ill. - Indiana State junior Carl Richard came up huge in the second consecutive league road victory for the Sycamores as he posted another double-double as ISU broke a 12-game losing streak to Bradley inside Carver Arena by the score of 59-53 in front of 7,567 fans.
ISU extended its current winning streak to four games are now 10-7, 5-1 MVC while Bradley fell to 6-11, 0-6 MVC. ISU is 5-1 in league play for the first time since the 2000-01 campaign and have won back-to-back league road games for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Additionally, 2008-09 is the last time ISU won four consecutive league contests. The Sycamores have completed a sweep of Bradley for the first time since doing the same in the 1997-98 campaign.
Richard led the way for ISU wit 17 points and 10 rebounds, which backed up his 17 point, 11 rebound performance in ISU's last game - a road victory over Drake on Sunday. Richard was 7-of-11 from the field, including a 3-of-5 mark from 3-point range in this game against Bradley. His trio of 3-pointers tied a career-best set versus the Bulldogs. Joining Richard is double figures scoring was senior Aaron Carter who hit 8-of-9 free throws to score 14 points. Carter has reached double figures scoring in each of his last three contests versus the Braves. He scored 19 against Bradley earlier this season.
Indiana State came into the contest leading the Valley in field goal percentage defense and limited the Braves to just 19-of-50 shooting (38 percent) from the field. The Sycamores continued their strong performance on the glass, owning the rebounding battle by a 36-31 margin. The Sycamore bench scored 15 points in the contest, which saw the return to floor of senior Jake Kelly and junior Dwayne Lathan who have missed multiple contests with injuries.
Bradley's Walter Lemon, Jr. with 5:35 left Indiana State with just a 45-44 lead. ISU responded with a Richard jumper to make it 47-44 before Bradley's Jake Eastman hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the Sycamore cushion down to two points. The Sycamores exploded for an 8-1 run which gave the ISU a 56-46 lead with less than a minute to play. The spurt began with a 3-pointer from Carter for a 50-45 advantage before Bradley's Andrew Warren hit a free throw to make it 50-46. ISU then got two free throws from Carter, a running lay-up by Odum with 49 seconds left and then two more free throws by Kelly. Aaron Carter was 3-of-4 at the free thorw line in the game's final 20 seconds as ISU escaped with a 59-53 victory.
Indiana State led by as many as 11 points in the first half, jumping out to a 23-12 lead with six minutes left on a trio of free throws by Carter. Bradley ended the first half on a 13-0 run to take a 25-23 lead into the half. The game marked the sixth time that ISU has trailed at the half this season, but the first time they the Sycamores have been able to come back and win the contest.
Bradley was led by Dodie Dunson who scored 21 points.
Indiana State returns to action on Sunday, January 16 when they host Creighton at Hulman Center. Tip-off is set for 1:05 p.m. (ET) and will be televised live on Fox Sports Midwest as part of the MVC's Television package.
