OMAHA, Neb. - Indiana State shooting fell cold in the second half as the Sycamores were defeated at Creighton by the score of 65-52 in front of 15,768 fans at Qwest Center Omaha.
ISU falls to to 14-11, 6-8 MVC while the Jays improved to 13-12, 8-6 MVC. Creighton won for the 11th consecutive meeting against the Sycamores at home.
ISU was paced by the play of Carl Richard who scored 15 points, hitting 5-of-6 shots from the field. Reed added 12 and Carter had 11.
Eight rebounds by Carter paced the Sycamores and set a new career high.
The Jays were led by Kenny Lawson, Jr., who scored 17 points, hitting 7-of-11 shots from the field.
Creighton scored the first basket of the game on a lay-up by Justin Carter less than 20 seconds into the contest, but Koang Dolouny was able to answer with his first collegiate basket in his home state of Nebraska to knot the contest.
The Jays put together a methodical 8-1 run that saw Indiana State only get a charity toss at the 16:44 mark until Aaron Carter got a 3-pointer with 12:51 on the clock to cut the Jays lead down to 10-6. Cavel Witter connected on a 3-pointer and Kenny Lawson, Jr. followed suit as Creighton took a 15-6 advantage.
ISU found itself down 17-6 as the Sycamores were held with a score for over six minutes as Leitnaker scored with 6:46 on the clock to start a 7-0 Indiana State run which got the Sycamores within 17-13 with 5:04 remaining. Leitnaker added a free throw and Aaron Carter made a pair to make it 17-11 and Richard capped the spurt with a short jumper.
Creighton responded by breaking nearly a three minute scoring drought of their own with a 3-pointer by Wragge to make it 20-13 with 4:20 on the clock.
The Sycamores cut the Creighton advantage back down to 25-19 on a conventional 3-point play by Richard with 1:51 to go and he added another bucket with a minute to play as the score crept to 28-21.
After the 'Jays added a free throw with 51 seconds to go before the break, Carter posted a second chance conventional 3-point play with 18 seconds left to send the score to 29-24. Lawson scored with two seconds remaining on the clock before the break to make it 31-24.
Carter led ISU with 11 points at the half to go with five boards, and hit 6-of-7 free throws. Richard added seven rebounds and five rebounds in the opening stanza.
Creighton opened the second half on a 12-4 run field by back-to-back treys from Ashford and Wragge as the Jays exploded to a 43-28 advantage with 15:29 left in the contest.
Reed got the Sycamores their first field goal after halftime at the 14:25 mark on long jumper by Rashad Reed which made the score 44-30.
The Sycamores got a 3-pointer from Reed at the 9:50 mark of the second half to make the score 52-35 as ISU only made three field goals over the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Reed stayed hot by rising up and connected on his second triple of the second half as ISU cut the Jay advantage down to 58-40 with 7:45 left in the contest.
The Sycamores continued their hot run with Reed's third trey after the half which cut the Creighton advantage down to 58-44 with over six minutes to go.
Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, February 13 when the Sycamores host Drake. Tipoff is set for 2:05 p.m. (ET). It will be Hall of Fame Day on the ISU campus.
