Sycamores Fall Victim To Wichita State Comeback Effort

WICHITA, Kan.- Indiana State shot over 54.8 percent from the field and held a 15-point lead well into the second half but it wasn't enough as Wichita State came back to earn a 76-70 MVC victory over the Sycamores.

ISU, playing without the services of its top three scorers, fell to 14-10, 6-7 MVC while Wichita State improved to 20-5, 9-4 MVC.

The Sycamores were paced by Jordan Printy who scored 16 points. Printy was 6-of-9 from the field, including a 4-of-6 mark from 3-point range. Carl Richard and Rashad Reed added 14 points as well. Koang Dolouny added five points and paced the team with six rebounds.

The Shockers' comeback was helped by their 20-3 advantage in points off turnovers and recorded 19 second chance points.

Wichita State's Clevin Hannah drew first blood in the contest as he drained a 3-pointer with 19:40 to go in the first half, but ISU ran off the game's next eight points to take an 8-3 advantage with 16:52 to go. Rashad Reed opened the Sycamore scoring and Jordan Printy followed with his own triple before Carl Richard found the soft touch on a teardrop.

Following a J.T. Durley free throw, the Sycamores stayed hot with another 3-pointer by Printy, followed by a Carl Richard putback and two more free throws to race out to 15-4 lead with 13:37 to go.

Following a Wichita State bucket with 13:12 left, ISU got scores from Isiah Martin, Dolouny and Printy to take a 21-6 lead over the Shockers through the first nine minutes of the half.

Following the hot start, the Shockers started to score, but the Sycamores kept lighting up the scoreboard as well in their own right. Printy was the first Sycamore to reach double figures scoring with a backdoor cut at the nine minute mark and Richard quickly joined him with a pair of free throws at the 7:22 mark as well as a long jumper with 6:28 left before the break as the Sycamores maintained a 31-17 cushion.

The Shockers were able to cut into the Sycamore lead, making it 31-23 on a 3-pointer by David Kyles with 5:04 left in the opening stanza, but Aaron Carter took control of a loose ball and was able to connect on a lay-up with 4:16 on the clock to stretch the advantage back out to 33-23.

Indiana State ran the lead out to 35-23 on a basket by Crawford before WSU scored five points in the half's final three minutes. Richard added a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left and took a 37-28 lead in the locker room.

Richard paced Indiana State with 12 points in the first half while Printy finished with nine. The Sycamores shot 60 percent from the field before the break (15-of-25) and were 3-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc. WSU was limited to 29.4 percent shooting (10-of-34) and were just 2-of-11 from 3-point range.

The Sycamores drew first blood in the second half on a bucket Richard with 19:25 on the clock which ran the ISU lead back out to 39-28. WSU responded with a quick 7-0 spurt to make it 39-35 before the Sycamores countered with an open 3-pointer by Printy and then a lay-up by Leitnaker to regain its nine-point lead it owned at the half, 44-35 with 16:45 remaining in the game.

ISU added another Carter free throw to make it 45-37 before the Sycamores went on a two and half minute dry spell. Wichita only owned a 3-pointer by Kyles with 13:20 on the clock which cut the ISU lead down to 45-40 with 13:20 left. The Sycamores the game's next seven points to run the lead out to 52-40 on two free throws by Crawford and a trey by Rashad Reed as well another jumper by Crawford.

The Shockers closed it 52-42, but Martin countered with a pair of charity tosses with 10:46 on the clock for the 54-42 cushion. After another ISU stop, the Sycamores got a huge 3-pointer from Dolouny with 9:47 to go as ISU tied its largest lead of the game at 57-42.

After Durley got on the Shockers back on the scoreboard to close to 57-43 with 9:22 on the clock, ISU got 1-of-2 charity tosses to fall as the Sycamores lead grew back to 58-43. Wichita then got a triple from Hannah at the 8:32 mark to get to within 58-46.

Wichita cut the lead down to 60-54 on a pair of free throws by Graham Hatch before Carter cooled the Shockers with a breakaway lay-up to stretch the lead out 62-54 with 6:06 remaining. Murry hit a long 3-pointer at the 5:55 mark to cut the ISU lead down to 62-57 and Durley added a free throw with 5:14 remaining as Wichita only trailed 62-58.

The Shockers cut the ISU lead down to 63-61 on a Clevin Hannah 3-pointer and then with four minutes to go tied it up on a runner by Murry.

Wichita earned its first lead since 3-0 on a pair of free throws by Durley and a Hannan jumper to make it 67-63 with 2:58 left.

After leading most of the first and second halves, Wichita State held a 67-65 lead with the ball as the clock ticked towards 1:30 to go and just as he did all second half, Clevin Hannah hit a big shot for the Shockers - this one a 3-pointer - to make it 72-67.

WSU added one more free throw to take a 75-67 lead before Printy connected on his fourth 3-pointer of the contest to make it 75-70 with 13 seconds on the clock.

Murry added one more free throw as Wichita earned a 76-70 victory.

Hannah led WSU with 16 points, one of four Shockers to reach double figures scoring.
