TULSA, Okla. -- In the landmark 2,500th game in the history of the Indiana State basketball program, the Sycamores (2-3) defeated Oral Roberts (0-3) 74-69 to give the Sycamores and first year Head Coach Greg Lansing their first road win. Eight Sycamores contributed in the hard fought victory against the Golden Eagles. Four Sycamores scored in double figures, with Dwayne Lathan leading all scorers with 21 points. Jake Kelly finished with 16, and Carl Richard and Jake Odum both dropped in ten.
A spirited Indiana State team opened the game with tough defense, holding ORU leading scorer Dominique Morrison to only four points in the first half.
The Sycamores were led by Carl Richard and Dwayne Lathan's eight points in the first half. A buzzer beating 3-pointer by Jordan Printy gave the Sycamores the lead at halftime by a score of 34-32.
The second half of action opened to the Jake Kelly and Dwayne Lathan show, with the two combining for 21 points in the opening 15 minutes. From there, it was Jake Odum's turn to step up, as he had all of his 10 points in the second half. In all, Kelly, Lathan and Odum contributed 36 of the second half's 40 points.
At the 17:34 mark, Jake Kelly connected with Dwayne Lathan for a lob dunk which jump started the Sycamore momentum. Indiana State displayed outstanding hustle and defense as well, and the Sycamores took an 11-point lead with 14:02 in the game. Isiah Martin boarded eight of his 9 rebounds in the second half, as well as blocking two shots. A steady Oral Roberts offense got the Golden Eagles within two points of the Sycamores, but again the defense stepped up, as a Jake Odum rebound at the :32 second mark prevented a tie. Odum was fouled the next three possessions and stepped up to the line, making five consecutive free throws to seal away the victory.
In the road victory, the Indiana State offense and defense was finally able to come together. The Sycamore outrebounded the Golden Eagles 40-35, and also won the battle at the free throw line. The Sycamores' 19 made free throws was only one shy of the Golden Eagles' 20, despite going to the line ten less times.
Indiana State returns to action this Saturday for their home opener against Buffalo (2-1) . The Sycamores will also be honoring the 2000 and 2001 'Back to Back Championship' teams.
