Sycamores Use Stout Second Half Defense And 21 Points From Harry Marshall To Earn Road Victory Over Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Indiana State held homestanding Evansville without a field goal for over a 12 minute stretch in the second half as the Sycamores earned a 63-56 MVC road victory over Evansville in front of 5,398 fans at Roberts Stadium.

ISU became just the 65th team nationally to earn at least five road victories this season and improved to 13-9, 5-6 MVC while the Purple Aces dropped to 6-15, 0-11 MVC.

Harry Marshall led ISU with 21 points as he tied a career-high by posting his 11th consecutive game reaching double figures scoring. Carl Richard added 12 points to the winning effort.

Josh Crawford set a career-high with seven blocked shots while Rashad Reed added seven rebounds.

ISU forced 17 Evansville turnovers and converted them into 14 points. The Sycamores held the Purple Aces without a bucket from the 12:45 mark of the second half until their were just 30 seconds left in the contest.

Held to five points in the opening half, Harry Marshall found his grove early in the second, scoring all eight of ISU's points over the first five minutes. ISU trailed 28-26 at the break, and Evansville was able to score the second stanza's first six points before Marshall got ISU on the board with a pair of free throws at the 17:26 mark to take make it 34-28.

Marshall created a steal and then hit a fastbreak lay-up to bring ISU within 37-34 with 14:50 left as ISU tried to whittle away at the Evansville advantage. UE answered with five straight points until Carl Richard hit a pair of free throws with 12:57 to go to make it 42-36.

Following a bucket by Peter van Tongeren with 12:45 to go which gave Evansville a 44-36 cushion, the Sycamores got a breakaway lay-up by Marshall (his tenth point of the half). ISU followed that with an Isiah Martin score inside to make it 44-40 as the clock went under 11 minutes to go which forced the Purple Aces to take a timeout.

ISU came all the way back to knot the contest at 44 on back-to-back buckets by Richard and Martin before Evansville broke a four minute scoreless drought with a free throw by Troy Taylor with 8:30 to go which gave the Purple Aces at 45-44 lead.

With 7:07 to go Josh Crawford went to the free throw line and converted a pair of charity tosses to retake a 46-45 lead. After a steal by Jordan Printy, Crawford scored on a putback with 6:17 left which bolsted the ISU advantage up to 48-45.

Carl Richard got into the second chance point parade as ISU continued its 14-1 run by not allowing any Evansville field goals for over nine minutes of the second half.

Printy then drilled a long 3-pointer to put ISU up 53-47 with 3:57 on the clock as the Sycamores took its largest lead of the game at six points. After free throws cut into the ISU lead to make it 53-49, Richard countered with one of his own as ISU took a 54-49 lead with 2:48 to go. Colt Ryan made 1-of-2 on UE's end with just over a minute left as the lead shrunk to 54-50.

Marshall's driving lay-up at the death of the shot clock with 50 seconds pushed the Sycamore lead back up to 56-50. After Evansville missed a pair of free throws, Marshall connected on a pair of free throws to give the Sycamores a 58-50 lead before UE's Ned Cox broke a 12 minute stretch without a field goal on a jumper with 31 seconds on the clock. Marshall hit four consecutive free throws before another Cox bucket as ISU lead 60-54 with 20 seconds left.

After an UE foul, Reed hit two free throws as ISU led 62-54. Evansville added a bucket and Reed posted another free throw as ISU won 63-56.

Indiana State got an early bucket from Brant Leitnaker to take a 2-0 advantage after both teams came up empty of their opening possessions. Evansville scored the game's next four points before Harry Marshall hit a wide-open 3-pointer with 17:13 on the clock to give the Sycamores a 5-4 lead.

ISU would not score against until the 11:35 mark of the first half as Evansville put together an 8-0 run until Carl Richard buried a 3-pointer to make it 12-8.

Another scoring drought ensued for the Sycamores as UE scored seven more unanswered to take its largest lead of the opening half, 19-8, with 8:42 left before halftime on a 3-pointer by Colt Ryan. But the Sycamores awoke in a big way offensively by scoring eight in a row over the next 1:06 to cut into the Purple Ace advantage and make it 19-16 with 7:30 left.

A four-point play by Aaron Carter sparked the ISU charge and then he added a fastbreak lay-up following a steal. Carl Richard added another lay-up and Josh Crawford was found open inside by Marshall with six minutes as the Sycamores made it 21-18.

Marshall's jumper with three minutes left before the break gave ISU a 22-21 advantage which they stretched out to 26-24 on a bucket by Isiah Martin with just over a minute left. Evansville countered with the half's final four points to take a 28-26 lead at the break.

Carter paced ISU with six points at the half.

Indiana State returns home to battle Illinois State on Wednesday, February 3 inside Hulman Center. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. (ET).
