DES MOINES, Iowa - Indiana State ended nine years of frustration in Des Moines with a 60-46 road victory over Drake on Sunday evening in front of 3,924 fans at the Drake Knapp Center.
ISU won its second consecutive game to improve to 10-4, 2-1 MVC while Drake fell to 5-10, 0-3 MVC.
The Sycamores' 10-4 start is its best since the 2006-07 campaign when ISU started out the season with a 10-4 record. ISU's last win at Drake came in 2000, a 73-56 victory for ISU over the Bulldogs.
ISU found itself trailing at the half (26-19) for just the fifth time this season. Lathan scored first for Indiana State to make it 26-21, but Drake's Josh Young overcame a scoreless first half to hit a 3-pointer to stretch the lead out to 29-21.
The Sycamores scored the game's next six points on a friendly bounce trey by Rashad Reed and a conventional 3-point play by Marshall to cut the lead down to 29-27.
Drake burst back ahead 38-33 before Lathan answered with a driving lay-up to make it 38-35 with 13:32 to go. Lathan got the next opportunity to score for the Sycamores and he converted a pair of free throws with 12 minutes left to cut the Bulldog lead down to 38-37.
Down 42-39, the Sycamores embarked on a 8-0 spurt that finally netted them a lead in the contest after hanging around throughout most of the contest. Jordan Printy, in a return home to his native state of Iowa, drained the first triple to knot the score at 42 and then Reed piled another on top for the 45-42 lead with 7:22 to go. Richard kept things swaying in the Sycamores' favor with a lay-up for a 47-42 advantage, ISU's largest of the game to that point.
The homestanding Bulldogs would not go away as they added a jumper by Aaron Hawley with 5:47 to go which broke a three minute scoreless streak and Richard came right back with a free throw with 4:55 to go for a 48-44 advantage.
Marshall hit a winding reverse lay-up with three minutes to go for a 50-44 lead and then Lathan hit a breakaway dunk off a Marshall steal for a 52-44 lead. ISU's surge continued on Reed's third triple of the second half as the cushion grew to 55-44.
Lathan and Marshall added lay-ups and Printy tacked on a free throw for the 60-46 conference road win.
Marshall led ISU with 15 points while Lathan posted 12 and Reed scored 11. Lathan has now reached double figures scoring in seven consecutive contests and 12 of the 13 games in which he has played.
The Sycamores dominated play in the paint in the second half as they owned a 34-20 advantage. ISU also scored 14 points off of 12 Drake miscues in the contest.
Both Indiana State and Drake came out of the gates roaring by scoring 11 points each in the game's first six minutes. Drake drew first blood on a 3-pointer by Aaron Hawley on their second possession but Harry Marshall had the answer on the next trip down the floor with a triple of his own to knot the score at 3.
The Bulldogs hit the 11 point mark first on a jumper by Craig Stanley but Marshall answered again with a jumper to tie the contest. But then the well went dry for both teams.
ISU didn't score against until Rashad Reed hit a lay-up nearly four minutes later while Drake scored once - a 3-pointer by Adam Templeton with 13:26 to go - and didn't score again until the 8:36 mark on a driving lay-up by Reece Uhlenhoop. Despite the Sycamore defense locking down on the Bulldogs for nearly five minutes of game time, the Sycamores couldn't grab a lead because they score just three points themselves over that same stretch and the score remained tied at 14.
Carl Richard answered the Drake return to scoring column with a jumper to tie the score at 16 with 8:14 to go and ISU would only score once more in the half - a conventional 3-point play by Marshall with 4:25 left. Over the final eight minutes of the opening stanza, Drake outscored the Sycamores by a 10-3 margin and led heading in the locker room by 26-19. Seth VanDeest added the final Drake score on a wide-open lay-up with just under four seconds remaining.
ISU was led in scoring at the half by Marshall's eight points as well as six from Richard.
