SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Missouri State used a blazing hot start from the field but a furious Sycamore second half sent the game into overtime as the Bears recorded a 99-92 overtime MVC victory in front of 7,343 fans at the JQH Arena.
ISU falls to 11-8, 3-5 MVC while the Bears improved to 14-5, 4-4 MVC.
ISU came down from as many as 24 points in the game to knot the score when Harry Marshall hit a 3-pointer with one second left in regulation at 83-83.
With the score tied 85-85, MSU scored five consecutive points and ISU countered with a driving jumper by Marshall and a wide-open 3-pointer by Reed to knot the score at 90.
MSU's Jermaine Mallett hit a contested 3-pointer with 1:21 left to give the Bears a 93-90 advantage.
The Bears took a 95-90 lead and Marshall's driving lay-up made it 95-92 with 24 seconds to go. Missouri State's Fuehrmeyer hit 1-of-2 at the free throw line for a 96-92 lead that eventually ended in a 99-92 final score.
The Sycamores were paced in scoring by Harry Marshall's 21 points, including the game tying shot with one second left in regulation. Also instrumental in the comeback was a career-high 18 points from Jordan Printy as he also set a new career-high with six 3-pointers in the game (five of which came after halftime).
Carl Richard tied a career-high with 20 points in the game. His previous 20-point effort came at Hulman Center against Missouri State last season. Aaron Carter scored a season-high 14 points as well, including a trio of second half 3-pointers.
Missouri State opened the game fire hot from the field, hitting 13 of their first 22 shots (59.1 percent), including four 3-pointers to take a 34-12 lead with 6:57 left in the opening half. ISU was held to just 4-of-17 during the same stretch, plus five turnovers. MSU converted those miscues into nine early points.
After suffering through a trio of scoring droughts that lasted at least three minutes in duration a piece while the Bears built their early advantage, ISU got an open lay-up by Carl Richard with five minutes to go to make it 34-14. Richard tacked on another score, a 3-pointer and a steal and fastbreak dunk to cut the MSU lead down to 38-21 with 2:51 left in the first half.
Missouri State cooled from their torrid opening pace as the ISU defense held them without a bucket from four nearly four minutes until a jumper by Nafis Ricks with 3:33 on the clock ended their slump.
The Bears ended the half up 43-23 as a last second heave by Josh Crawford fell just short.
ISU was led at the half by Richard's 11 points.
The Sycamores briefly cut the Missouri State halftime lead of 20 down to 43-28 on a pair of free throws by Richard and another 3-pointer by Printy just one minute into the second half. The Sycamores then surrendered a 9-0 run to the Bears as the lead was run back out to 52-28 until Leitnaker answered with a lay-up to make it 52-30.
Indiana State continued to scratch back into the game with back-to-back-to-back layups from Richard, Isiah Martin and Richard as well as another bucket by Martin and a 3-pointer by Printy to cut the lead back to 60-41 with 11:36 to go.
A pair of MSU free throws was followed by a rare four point play from Aaron Carter as he fouled in the act of making a 3-pointer. That shot and free throw pulled ISU within 60-45 with 11:08 to go.
ISU continued a run which kept them creeping into the contest with a long jumper by Reed which made it 64-47 and consecutive 3-pointers by Carter made it 65-53 with 9:20 to go.
The second half starring Aaron Carter continued as he fouled on another 3-point shot with 8:08 to go and made 2-of-3 at the charity stripe to make it 65-55. Missouri State stopped the ISU run with five consecutive points to retake a 70-55 advantage with a fastbreak lay-up from Jermaine Mallett.
The Sycamores answered with a 7-0 run with four consecutive free throws by Marshall and a 3-pointer by Richard as ISU got within 70-62 at the 6:11 mark. Indiana State trailed by 24 points at the 16:20 mark and answered with 10 minutes of brilliant basketball to cut the Bear lead all the way down to eight.
Missouri State scored sparingly as ISU got a lay-up from Carter and a spinning jumper from Marshall with four and half to go to make it 73-66.
A 3-pointer by Jordan Printy with 1:31 to go made it 79-72 and then Reed converted one off a MSU turnover to make it 79-75 with 1:10 left. After a pair of MSU free throws, Marshall hit a running lay-up to make it 81-77 with a minute left. Printy set a career-high with six 3-pointers in a game to make it 81-80 with 50 seconds to go.
MSU made 82-80 with a free throw and then Aaron Carter created a steal in the press to give the Sycamores the ball back with 26.3 seconds showing on the clock. Marshall's heroics capitalized on Missouri State late game turnovers.
The Indiana State Sycamores return home to face off against league-leading Northern Iowa on Sunday, January 24.
