TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? Indiana State junior Kylie Hutson set a new school record and a new record of Marks Field in the women's pole vault Saturday, one of many outstanding results for the Sycamores at the Pacesetter Invitational who had several more athletes qualify for the NCAA Mideast Regional later this month.
Hutson had a vault of 14'2” (4.32 meters) to break her own ISU record she set last year and the Marks Field record she set at the Indiana State Invitational earlier this season.
Jeanne' Middleton outran the field and surpassed the regional qualifying mark in the 100 meters with a time of 11.53. ISU's Jaquelle Spencer was fourth in 12.06. Spencer came back to win the 200 meters with a time of 25.20.
Mary Kate Conway won the 800 meters with a time of 56.48 while Adriane Wunderlich finished second in the 800 meters (2:14.24) with Allison Malone right behind in third (2:16.32) and ISU's Katie Weber fifth (2:17.03).
Heather Stembridge ran to a dominating win in the 1500 meters, finishing in 4:29.71, two seconds off a regional qualifying mark. Julia Costello was fourth in 4:43.28 while Kacie Klem finished fifth in 4:46.11.
Kayla Alexander was third in the 5000 meters (17:40.80) and Kelsie Slater was fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:54.16. Sarah Snapp fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.79) while Amanda Jones finished fourth (1:03.56) and Rachel Posey fifth (1:05.36) in the 400 meter hurdles.
Lauren Martin won the long jump with a leap of 19'6.75” (5.96 meters) while Erica Moore finished third with a leap of 17'8” (5.38 meters). Annie Beasley was third in the high jump at 5'3” (1.60 meters).
Kelsey Hanley won the hammer throw with a regional qualifying mark of 184'10”, a personal best for the Sycamore sophomore.
The Sycamores won the 4x100 meter relay with Jaquelle Spencer, Jeanne' Middleton, Lauren Martin and Mary Kate Conway combining for a time of 46.14, less than a half second off a regional qualifying mark.
Indiana State also won the4x400 meter relay as Lauren Martin, Mary Kate Conway, Rachel Posey and Erica Moore won with a time of 3:44.46, just off the Marks field record and just short of a regional qualifying mark. ISU's “B” team finished fifth as Kaci Smith, Adriane Wunderlich, Allison Malone and Katie Weber finished in 4:01.00.
Jeramie Gray missed an NCAA qualifying mark by just two-hundredths of a second as he won the 100 meters in 10.57 against a slight headwind. ISU's Daryl Truitt was pushing Gray in the final meters of the race, finishing second in 10.76.
Gary Ogburn ran to the win in the 200 meters with a time of 21.68, just short of a regional qualifying mark, with Daryl Truitt fourth in 22.06.
Anthony Bertoli won the 400 meter hurdles, equaling the regional qualifying mark with a winning time of 52.51. James Twitchell was second (54.20) for ISU. Michael Roberts won the 110 meter hurdles for the Sycamores with a time of 14.90 with Tykeen Fulton fourth (15.40) and Patrick Mendenhall fifth (15.54).
Indiana State had four of the top five places in the 1500 meters with Jeremiah Vaughan winning the event in 3:53.74 with Kyle Walsh second at 3:55.08, Michael Disher third in 3:56.02 and Scott Koressel fifth in 3:56.72.
Konstantinos Tzirtziris was second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.47 while Josh Bedford was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:01.33) and Craig Padgett was second in 14:56.43.
Major Clay set a new personal best and improved his regional qualifying mark by winning the long jump with a leap of 7'2.5”. David Bell was second at 6'8.75” with Brandon Youngdale fourth with a leap of 6'8.75” and Curt Sunderland fifth at 6'6.75”.
Josh Williams and Lyle Nolcox each surpassed the regional qualifying mark in the hammer throw with Williams winning the event with a throw of 191'9” (58.46 meters) and Nolcox second with a throw of 186'5” (56.82 meters). ISU's Brandon Pounds was fifth with a throw of 178'2” (54.31 meters).
Pounds was the winner in the shot put with a regional qualifying mark of 56'10” with ISU's George Weed third at 51'2.25”. Julius Smith won the discus for the Sycamores with a toss of 157'01” while Josh Williams was second in the javelin with a throw of 169'5”.
Ernest Rollins won the triple jump with a leap of 45'11.75” while Jon Lautzenheiser was third in the long jump (21'8”). The Sycamores had three of the top five finishes in the pole vault with Andrew LaMaster third, Anthony Bertoli fourth and Jeremy Pratt, all vaulting 15'3”.
Indiana State won the 4x100 relay as Daryl Truitt, Gray Ogburn, Sean Wright and Jeramie Gray combined to finish in 41.01, just a half second off a regional qualifying mark. The Sycamore 4x400 meter relay team was second as Gary Ogburn, Anthony Bertoli, Colton Slack and Sean Wright finished in 3:19.33.
Indiana State will be competing at the Billy Hayes Invitational next Friday and then host the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships May 15, 16, 17.
