INDIANAPOLIS, IND. ? The Indiana State track & field team recorded 14 top 10 finishes at the 2009 Stan Lyons Invitational Saturday in Indianapolis led by Kelsey Hanley who qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the women's Hammer Throw.
Hanley posted the fourth best distance in school history in the hammer throw with a toss of 182'0” (55.47 meters) to finish second in the event and qualify for the regional. The sophomore from Arcadia, Ind., was also seventh in the discus with a throw of 144'11” (44.17 meters). She had previously qualified for the discus at the Indiana Quadrangular last weekend with a personal best throw of 156'0” (47.54 meters).
Also for the Sycamore women, Alicia Fritschi tied for fifth in the pole vault with a personal best vault of 12'1.5” (3.70 meters). Annie Beasley and Brynlea Mattocks tied for 10th in the high jump, both with a leap of 5'1” (1.55 meters).
In track events, Julia Costello was ninth in the 800 meters with her best time this season of 2:20.87 while Bethany Scruton was ninth in the 3000 meters with a time of 11:08.73.
On the men's side, Major Clay placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6'10.75” (2.10 meters) while David Bell and Curt Sunderland tied for fourth, both going 6'6.75” (2.00 meters), and Brandon Youngdale finished tied for ninth with a leap of 6'4.75” (1.95 meters).
Joshua Williams was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 175'4” (53.45 meters) while also placing eighth in the hammer throw with a personal best toss of 183'9” (56.00 meters) just short of a regional qualifying mark. George Weed was ninth in the discus with a throw of 150'11” (46.00 meters).
In track events, Jeremiah Vaughan placed third in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:46.31 while James Twitchell finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.23. Cody Siblisk was sixth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 10:00.20.
Indiana State will host their second outdoor meet of the season on Saturday with the Pacesetter Invitational with action beginning at 9 a.m. (ET) at Wolf Field. Competing along with the Sycamores will be Illinois State, Bradley, DePauw, Washington University, Centre College, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne, Grand Valley State, Monmouth College, and SIU-Edwardsville.
