COLUMBUS, MO. ? The Indiana State men's track & field team captured the Tom Botts Invitational (Missouri Quadrangular) Saturday, outpointing host Missouri to capture the team title while the women's team finished second to the host Tigers.
“This was close meet,” John McNichols, ISU men's track & field coach, said. “To win over these ranked teams is an accomplishment for our team. We had some really good individual efforts and were able to hold off Missouri in the final events.”
The Sycamores won the team title with 199.50 points, holding off the Missouri Tigers who were second with 191 points. The Air Force Academy finished third with 175.50 points while Tulsa was fourth with 62 points.
The Indiana State women finished second with 173 points. Missouri won the team title with 225.50 points with the Air Force Academy third with 130 points and Tulsa fourth with 94.50 points.
“Collectively, this was a very disappointing meet for us,” John Gartland, ISU women's track & Field coach said. “I thought that we had a very good chance to beat Missouri but we just did not get the performances we needed. We still had some outstanding individual accomplishments, however.”
The Sycamore men won seven events on the day with Daryl Truitt taking the 100 meters in 10.97 seconds, Anthony Bertoli won the 400 meter hurdles in 52.82, Michael Disher the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:11.96, Ernest Rollins won the triple jump with a leap of 46-feet-1.25 (14.05 meters), Brandon Pounds the shot put with a heave of 56-feet-4.50 (17.18 meters), and George Weed the discus with a throw of 163-feet-02 (49.74 meters).
Indiana State also won the 4x100 meter relay as Truitt, Antinoice Surry, Sean Wright and Gary Ogburn combined to finish in a meet record time of 41.05.
Truitt was also second in the 200 meters (21.54), Andrew Stull finished second in the 100 meters (11.12) and third in the 200 meters (21.62), Wright was second in the 400 meters (47.79), Colton Slack fourth in the 400 meters (49.51), Jeremiah Vaughan fourth in the 3000 meters (8:33.57), Michael Roberts second in the 110 meter hurdles (14.51) and Bertoli third in the 110 meter hurdles (15.30).
The 4x400 meter relay team of Wright, Surry, Slack and Bertoli was second in 3:14.86 with ISU's second 4x400 team of Stull, James Twitchell, Andrew Geller and Steven Swinford fifth in 3:26.27.
Curt Sunderland was second in the high jump with a leap of 6-feet-6.75 (2.00 meters) while Brandon Youngdale was third in the high jump at 6-feet-4.75 (1.95 meters). Swinford placed second in the pole vault at 15-feet-1 (4.60 meters), Jon Lautzenheiser finished second in the long jump with a leap of 20-feet-11.75 (6.39 meters), and Rollins third in the long jump at 20-feet-10.50 (6.36 meters).
Weed, who won the discus, actually led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Sycamores in the event with Julius Smith second at 160-feet-8 (48.98 meters) and Pounds third at 160-feet-0 (48.77 meters).
The Sycamore women's track & field team had four winners on the day as Jeanne' Middleton won the 100 meters in 11.78 and the 200 meters in 24.21 while Erica Moore took the 400 meter hurdles in 58.64, better her regional qualifying mark, and Lauren Martin won the triple jump with a leap of 39-feet-7.75 (12.08 meters).
Moore was also third in the 100 meters (14.63) and finished third in the long jump at 18-feet-7.25 (5.67 meters).
Jaquelle Spencer was third in the 100 meters (12.39), Mary Kate Conway second in the 400 meters (57.36), Heather Stembridge second in the 1500 meters (4:33.44), Kayla Alexander third in the 3000 meters (10:14.64), and Adriane Wunderlich was second in her first 3000 meter steeplechase race with a time of 12:06.99
The Sycamore team of Spencer, Middleton, Martin and Conway finished second in 47.12 while the 4x400 relay team of Martin, Conway, Kaci Smith and Moore was third with a time of 3:44.84.
Annie Beasley finished second in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet-3 (1.60 meters) while Nikki Royer was second in the pole vault at 11-feet-7.75 (3.55 meters). Kelsey Hanley was fourth in the discus with a throw of 139-feet-04 (42.46 meters) while Autumn Sowders was fourth in the javelin with a toss of 105-feet-02 (32.06 meters).
Part of the Sycamore team will be participating in the Indiana Quadrangular next Friday and Saturday with several other members competing in the Rose-Hulman Open on Friday.
