CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? The
Indiana State baseball started the season 9-1
thanks to scoring runs early in games to put their opponents in an early
hole. On Wednesday, that role was
reversed as Austin Peay (3-5) scored five runs in the first inning and the
Sycamores (9-2) never recovered as they dropped a 12-4 ballgame to the
Governors at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Freshman Matt Bayes
(0-1) suffered the loss for the Sycamores, as he lasted just one inning and
gave up five earned runs on four hits.
Senior Chris Dougherty did not fare much better in relief, as he
surrendered four earned runs on three hits while walking three in 2.1 innings
of work. Jack Snodgrass (1-0) earned the
win for the Governors, as he held ISU to just one run on six hits in 6.2
innings of work.
“They jumped out on us
early and we never really recovered,” head coach Lindsay Meggs said. “But, I told the guys to just forget about
this one and to get back to doing the things that helped us start 9-1. We will start over and forget this one and
get mentally and physically prepared for three tough games this weekend.”
The Governors put five
runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning to take the early
lead. Greg Bachman started the barrage
with a two-run double and Brooks Hunton followed with a two-run home run to
make the score 4-0. Daniel Baggett
capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to widen the APSU lead to 5-0.
ISU answered with a run
in the top of the fourth inning, as junior Nick Ciolli launched his second home
run of the year to cut the lead to 5-1.
However, the Governors answered back with four runs on three hits in the
bottom half of the inning to make the score 9-1 after four innings of play. Adam Browett struck the big blow in the
inning for APSU with a two run single.
Browett added another
RBI single and Baggett chipped in with another sacrifice fly to push two more
runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score
11-1. APSU then tacked on its final run
of the day in the bottom of the seventh inning on a RBI single by Josh Purcell
to make the score 12-1 after seven innings of play.
The Sycamores did not go
away and fought back with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. With runners on second and third and one out,
freshman Joe Meggs picked up a RBI single to score freshman Jeff King and
advance junior Luke Fieser to third base.
Fieser then scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning as
Meggs went to second base. Meggs then
advanced to third on a ground out by freshman Koby Kraemer for junior Ben
Caple, who ripped a RBI single to score Meggs for the third run of the inning
and bring the score to its final at 12-1.
The Sycamores return to
action on Friday, when they travel to Lexington, Ky., for the first of three games
against the No. 29 ranked Kentucky Wildcats.
First pitch in game one is set for 4 p.m. EST at Cliff Hagen Stadium.
“I've explained to the
guys that we can't get caught up in the fact that this team is one of the tops
in the country,” Meggs said. “We've
played good teams from the SEC before and we have competed well against them. If we focus on what we can control and play
the way we are capable of, then we will get better from this experience and
continue to improve against an awfully good team.”
