TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? The
Indiana State baseball team had not lost a
mid-week game at home heading into Wednesday's game against in-state rival Ball State.
Thanks to four home runs and 15 hits at the plate, the Sycamores (14-9,
1-2 MVC) extended that mark to 5-0 with a 14-6 win over the Cardinals (11-10,
2-1 MAC) at Sycamore Field. With the win, ISU also improved to 3-0
against teams from the Hoosier State in mid-week contests.
Freshman
starter Cordell Greene (2-1) did not surrender a run to Ball State in six inning of work for the
Sycamores to pick up his second win of the season. Greene scattered nine hits in those six
innings while striking out three Cardinal hitters. BSU starter Adam Quinn (1-2) suffered the
loss, as he allowed four earned runs on four hits in just two innings of work
on the mound.
The
Sycamores got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning, when Ryan
Strausborger scored on a Nick Ciolli RBI single to center field. ISU would then tack on three runs in the
bottom of the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Tyler Graham hit his first home run of his
career at ISU, a two run shot over the left field wall, to score the first two
runs of the frame. After a Bronco
Lafrenz fly out, Brian Jett launched his fifth home run of the season to give
ISU its third run of the inning.
Four
more runs would cross the plate for the Sycamores in the bottom of the third
inning to make the score 8-0. Kyle
Burnam reached base on a throwing error to start the inning and Brady Shoemaker
brought him in with a long home run to left field, his third of the
season. Later in the inning, Jett got
back into the action as he ripped a two-out single up the middle to score Ciolli
and Graham and cap off the inning for ISU.
After
both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning, the Sycamores added three more
runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 11-0 lead. Lafrenz got the scoring started with a
two-run single up the middle and then advanced to second base on a throwing
error by Ball State center fielder Jeremy
Hazelbaker. Later in the inning, Pascual
Del Real brought in Lafrenz from third base with a RBI single up the middle.
The runs
kept coming for ISU in the bottom of the seventh inning, as three more runs
were put on the scoreboard to make the lead 14-0. With two outs in the inning, Burnam reach on
a single to left field and then scored on Shoemaker's second home run of the game,
this time a two-run shot to deep right center field. Cole Standridge then walked and advanced to
second base on a balk, before pinch hitter Brian Ramirez ripped a RBI single
into right field to score Standridge for the third run of the inning.
Ball State would finally get to the Indiana State pitchers in the top of the
eighth inning, as the Cardinals scored six runs on five hits and an ISU error
in the frame to cut the lead to 12-6.
The big blow came off the bat of T.J. Baumet, who hit a long three-run home
run off ISU reliever Brendon Smith to keep the late rally alive.
However,
those six runs would come a little late as David Gurbach shut down the
Cardinals in the ninth inning to preserve the 14-6 victory. Shoemaker finished the day 2-for-4 with the
two home runs and four RBI to lead the way for ISU, while Jett added two hits
and three RBI as well. Ciolli also had a
solid day at the play with three hits while Graham finished 2-for-3 with three
runs scored and two RBI.
The
Sycamores return to action on Friday, when they begin a three-game Missouri
Valley Conference series at Illinois State.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST at Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Ill.
