AMES, IOWA ? Indiana State junior Erica Moore finished second in the pentathlon at the Iowa State Classic last year and she wasn't about to settle for anything less than first this year.

The Sycamore blistered the field in the 800 meters, the final event of the pentathlon, winning by over eight seconds to secure first place with a total of 4030 points. That is just 20 points short of an automatic qualifying berth but does give her a provisional qualifying mark for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Moore finished fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.85 seconds) and the high jump (1.63 meters), the first two events of the pentathlon and was seventh in the shot put (10.66 meters).

The Sullivan, Ind., native came back with a second place finish in the long jump (5.69 meters) and then blew away the field in winning the 800 meters, cruising to a victory in 2:08.36.

Missouri's Kaela Rorvig was second in 800 meters with a time of 2:16.97 and finished second in the pentathlon with 3,827 points. Amy Bowman of Arkansas State was third with 3,738 points. Rorvig and Bowman also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Indiana State's Dana Sander finished 15th in the pentathlon with 3,126 points while Rachel Posey was 16th with 3,113 points.

The other competition for the first day of the Iowa State Classic was in the Heptathlon where Indiana State's Anthony Bertoli is in sixth place after the first four events. The final three events will take place Friday morning.

The rest of the Sycamores will be among 80 schools competing when the regular competition begins Friday afternoon. The Classic will wrap up on Saturday.
