Indiana State Falls to SMU, 69-54

NASSAU, Bahamas - The Indiana State women's basketball team dropped to 9-2 on the season with a 69-54 loss to SMU at the Bahamas Sunsplash Shootout on Sunday evening at Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium.

Junior forward Kelsie Cooley led the Sycamores with a season-high 15 points, while senior guard Kelsey Luna also reached double figure scoring at 11 points. The duo was named to the all-tournament team, in addition to Wichita State's Morgan Boyd, UMKC's Chazny Morris, and SMU's Christine Elliott. Jillian Samuels of SMU was honored as the tournament's most valuable player.

SMU (8-2) was led by Jillian Samuels with 19 points and Elliott, who had six rebounds and 11 points. In addition to Samuels and Elliott, the Mustangs finished with two other players in double digits -- Brittany Gilliam (15) and Raquel Christian (11).

Cooley opened the half for the Sycamores with two free throws in the first minute and a subsequent seven points total over the next seven minutes, but SMU kept it close at a 9-9 tie. The Mustangs then took a 14-9 lead on a three by Gilliam, and two jumpers from Cooley and charity shots from Luna tied the game again. SMU's Raquel Christian notched six points and Samuels had four over the remaining minutes, leaving ISU down 30-22 at the half.

SMU came out firing in the second stanza, taking as large as an 18-point lead on a triple by Samuels. Sophomore Shannon Thomas had back-to-back layups and a pair of free throws to narrow the game to seven, and a drive to the basket by Whitley made it 46-41.

The Mustangs then went on a 23-13 run in the final eight minutes, sparked by 12 points from Gilliam. Two free throws banked in from Mattox and a jumper by Amanda Pedro kept it close at a seven-point margin, but SMU put it away late to finish with a 69-54 win.

Indiana State returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 31 in its Missouri Valley Conference opener with Creighton. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (ET) at Hulman Center.
