TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Infused with new blood, the Indiana State Sycamores raced to an 89-50 exhibition victory over cross town foe Rose-Hulman in front of 4,812 fans at Hulman Center. Indiana State and Rose-Hulman met on the hardwood for the first time since 1932.

The Sycamores placed four scorers in double figures, paced by junior transfer Jake Kelly and redshirt freshman Koang Doluony who scored 13 each. Also in double figures were sophomore Dwayne Lathan with 11 and freshman Jake Odum who finished with 10. None of those four players were on the active roster one season ago. Of the 89 points the Sycamores piled on the scoreboard, Sycamore newcomers scored 56. All 13 Sycamores that played scored in the contest.

Indiana State blazed the nets in the game, hitting from the field at a 55.6 percent clip. Outside of the 3-point arc, the Sycamores were just as deadly, connected on 12 triples, hitting at a 54.5 percent mark. ISU was 17-of-21 at the free throw line in the exhibition victory.

The defense proved to be solid for the Sycamores as well as ISU forced 17 Fighting Engineer turnovers, and recorded nine steals, paced by four from Lathan. Kelly added three off the bench while Jordan Printy and Odum had one each. The Sycamores outrebounded RHIT by a 44-26 margin in the contest, as 12 different Sycamores recorded at least one carom.

Kelly led ISU on the boards with seven rebounds while Odum and Carl Richard had six each.

Dulouny paced the Sycamores with three 3-pointers, while Printy, Rashad Reed and Odum added two each.

The Sycamores raced out a 46-17 lead at the half, paced by a 62.1 percent mark from the field shooting before the break and a stifling defense which yielded just a 19.2 percent shooting mark for Rose-Hulman. The lead climaxed at 42 with 4:09 left in the game when the Sycamores led 85-43 after a pair of Kelly free throws. Kelly was 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in the contest.

Indiana State led 6-0 in the opening moments and did not allow a Rose-Hulman field goal for nearly five minutes at the beginning of the contest in building a quick 9-4 advantage. After the Engineers first field goal, things continued to run dry for the RHIT as went on a 13-0 spurt to take a 22-4 lead with 12:22 left before the break. ISU led by a score of 39-8 with just over five minutes left before the break before allowing Rose to hit double-digits on their next possession.

Jason Haslag led the Fighting Engineers with 12 points while Blake Knotts added 10.

The Sycamores return to action on Saturday, November 7 when they host Indianapolis in the second and final exhibition contest of the season. Tip-off at Hulman Center is set for 2:05 p.m.

POSTGAME QUOTES:

Rose-Hulman Head Coach Jim Shaw

Opening Statement
“This was a great experience. I was really pleased with the way our guys played in the second half. In the first half, I think we got a little rattled and maybe the circumstances overwhelmed us. I think in the in the second half, we showed a little more of what we can do in the future. I was very pleased with the way we played in the second half and pleased with our effort the entire game.”

On Indiana State
“Indiana State, I think, is pretty good. They're not good five or six guys, even for a Missouri Valley team. I think Kevin (McKenna) has some good things there. They are very deep with quality Missouri Valley players in my mind. As a result, they just kept coming at us defensively. It's pressure that we don't see in practice. It is impossible to prepare for better athletes, longer athletes, in practice. It took us a long time to get used to that.”

On making adjustments at the half
“At halftime, our guys said the right things – settle down – and I think you saw in the second half we executed some things. We were able to move the basketball and get shots, and that pleased me that we could make that progress.”

On tonight's game preparing the team for upcoming opponents
“I'm hoping what it does is like swinging a weighted baseball bat. I'm hoping that when we play people who are a little more like us, that we can swing that bat a little quicker. That's the easiest way of explaining it. We open up with Milliken in a couple of weeks, and I think they will try to play very similarly to Indiana State. But instead of 6-10, 6-11, 6-8 at the five, it's more kids like 6-6, 6-7. Instead of Carl Richard and No. 1 (Koang Doluony) out there, who are long and athletic and skilled, their guys aren't quite as good. I think it'll really help us if it didn't destroy our confidence. Seeing how our guys responded, it didn't.”

Rose-Hulman Forward Jason Haslag
On playing on a bigger stage against Indiana State
“It definitely was, going from the Rose-Hulman gym to this gym. I walked into the gym, and I was amazed. It was amazing. I love playing in the big arena, and it was a good experience.”

On the challenge of playing against ISU's length
“They were definitely very, very long – a lot longer than the teams we're going to see. It's a good thing. It'll help the team. As far as the differences, they had so many blocks on us. That was a big thing. They cause a lot of turnovers with their length, so I thought that was a big key to the turnovers being so high for us.”

Indiana State Head Coach Kevin McKenna

Opening Statement
“I thought we got off to a good start defensively with some good energy. The things we focused on were pretty good early. Our effort and communication were two things we wanted to get a good start on, and I thought we did that. In the second half, it just dropped a little bit. For the most part, effort was good. I think our athleticism showed a little bit tonight in that we're improved and deeper. We got some guys some good minutes and experience, and overall, it was a good night for us.”

On guard Jake Odum
“That's what we liked about him when we recruited him – I just think he's a scrappy, competitive kid. He's always sticking his nose in there. He dove on the floor a couple of times. He's an instinctive ballplayer, and I like what he brings to the team. He brings defense. He got a few rebounds  -- six rebounds, 10 points, three assists, two steals. That's what he did in high school. Whether he can do that right out of the gate here against Division I competition here remains to be seen, but we like what we see in practice. His effort has been good.”

On bigger players in Josh Crawford, Brant Leitnaker and Isiah Martin
“I think Josh and Brant, and Isiah for that matter, all three of them bring something. Brant's a really good help defender. He really understands when his man goes to screen where he needs to be. He's not the quickest guy in the world, but he knows where he needs to be, and he gets there with his brains. He played under control tonight. He played 10 minutes or so and did some good things out there. Josh is more active and mobile and not quite as strong as Brant, but active and blocked some shots and rebounded and ran the floor pretty hard. Isiah's kind of the same as Josh. He just doesn't have the range as Josh has on his shot. I think all three bring something to the table, and we're going to keep rolling them out there. Whoever's getting it done is going to get that opportunity.”

On Koang Doluony
“He's a versatile, skilled guy, and we like the development that he's made over the last year. When we got him last year, he was 176 pounds and could barely bench press 135. Now he's an inch taller, he's put on 20 pounds and he can bench press 235 a few times. So the redshirt year really helped him develop. We're trying to build something here, and we're trying to build a program. He wasn't ready last year, and this year he is more ready. Hopefully he'll continue to improve and get better. He made some defensive mistakes, but hopefully we'll iron those out. He is long; he has a seven-foot wingspan and loves to play. He's always in there shooting; he's always working on his game, and those kinds of things pay off.”

Indiana State Guard Jake Odum
On seeing tonight's game as an opportunity for the team
“It's huge. It lets everyone get their feet wet. It lets the freshmen and Dwayne and Jake all get to play with our teammates who were here last year. It's exciting to get on the floor with them.”

On his motivation to earn playing time
“I'm just a competitor. I want to earn my minutes. I want to try to get some minutes and get some playing time. Every time I'm out there on the floor, I just leave it all out there. Every game is a battle, but I wanted to bring my intensity tonight and show the fans what I can do and show the team I'm ready to play whenever I'm needed. “

Indiana State Forward Koang Doluony
On The Team's Play
“I really liked the way we came out and hustled. We didn't take any players off, and I liked how we shared the ball. Everyone got to play today. That was pretty good.”
