BOWLING
GREEN, Ky. -- Senior Rashad Reed
hit a free throw with one-tenth of a second on the clock as Indiana State
stunned 2,269 fans at historic E.A. Diddle Arena and the Sycamores earned a
dramatic 64-63 win over Western Kentucky in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT
Season Tipoff.
ISU improves to 4-2 on the season while Western
Kentucky dropped to 2-2.
The Sycamores wrapped up play in the NIT Season
Tipoff with a 2-2 record. ISU downed Milwaukee and Western Kentucky and fell to
Coastal Carolina and LSU.
ISU led 35-21 at the half and stretched the lead
to a game-high 16 points (40-26) with 19:04 left in the game on a 3-pointer by
Dwayne Lathan.
The lead shrunk down to 42-35 with 14:28 left on
a traditional 3-point play by AJ Slaughter, but off the bench freshman Koang
Doluony stretched it back to double digits, 45-35 with a 3-point answer.
Doluony's trey kick-started a 7-0 spurt which made it 49-35 with 12 and a half
minutes to go.
ISU took several Western Kentucky punches over
the next few minutes but a pair of Jake Kelly free throws made it 59-49 with
three and half minutes left.
WKU's star Slaughter hit a 3-pointer with three
minutes left which made it 59-52. After an ISU turnover and a Kelly foul, WKU's
Steffphon Pettigrew hit 1-of-2 free throws to thin the Sycamores advantage to
59-53 with 1:58 left.
Marshall answered with a lay-up and a free throw
to make it 62-53. Slaughter drove to the basket for a score and after an ISU
turnover, hit a 3-pointer to make it 62-58 with 1:21 left.
Kelly hit 1-of-2 free throws to stretch the ISU
lead to 63-58 and Pettigrew made it 63-60 with 1:14 left after an over the back
foul on Brant Leitnaker.
ISU used all of the shot clock and Marshall's long
3-point attempt didn't connect as Slaughter came down with the rebound.
Following a WKU time-out, ISU got a coveted stop
on the defensive end, but Lathan missed both ensuing free throws to give the
Hilltoppers another chance. With six tenths of a second on the clock and the
ISU defense guarding hard trying to prevent a game-tying 3-point shot, Jameson
Tipping stepped through a Sycamore defender and launched an off-balance, line
drive shot that found nothing but net to tie the contest.
Marshall took the ball out of bounds and heaved a
prayer in the direction of a streaking Reed down the left sideline. Reed and
the ball arrived just past the 3-point line at nearly the same time as WKU's
Jeremy Evans. There was contact and the official signaled a foul.
After discussion, Reed was awarded a pair of free
throws after it was determined that the foul was committed before the buzzer
and on the floor. With one-tenth of a second on the clock, Reed was awarded two
free throws as Western Kentucky was over the limit of 10 fouls. Reed hit the first
to give ISU a 64-63 lead and missed the second. The game ended when Slaughter
touched the ball and there was not enough time remaining for legal shot.
The Sycamores fell behind 4-0 n the game, but
tied it up at 8 on a pair of free throws by Lathan with 14:16 on the clock.
After a Caden Dickerson 3-pointer made it 14-13, the Sycamores got back-to-back
buckets by Jordan Printy and reed to make it 18-13.
After Western cut the Sycamore lead down to
19-17, Marshall scored a bucket and that was followed by a lay-up from Kelly as
well as Lathan 3-pointer as ISU found themselves up 26-17 with 5:08 to go.
WKU scored a bucket at 4:36 to end a nearly two
minute scoring drought, before ISU quick scored the game's next seven points on
buckets by Reed and Lathan as well as wide-open triple by Printy. After the
spurt, ISU led 33-19 with just over two minutes left.
Lathan answered a Pettigrew bucket at the end of
the first half to give the Sycamores a 35-21 advantage heading back into the
lockeroom.
Lathan reached double figures scoring for the
fifth time in five games as he paced ISU with 15 points, 12 of which were
scored in the first half. He hit 5-of-8 shots from the field, including a pair
of 3-pointers and three free throws. He added five rebounds in 20 minutes of
action.
Reed's ninth point was the decisive one in the
contest as Kelly added nine as well. Marshall, Doluony and Printy scored seven
each. Josh Crawford led ISU with six rebounds.
The Sycamores won the battle on the glass, 38-34
over the Hilltoppers.
ISU held WKU, which came within an eyelash of
downing Gonzaga and advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 one year ago, to 40 percent
shooting, as they hit 24-of-60 field goals.
The win by ISU snapped a 15-game home court
winning streak for the Hilltoppers, who had won 29 of its last 30 contests at
Diddle Arena. WKU was poised to win its 500th all-time game in its venerable
home, but ISU stopped that with the heart-pounding victory.
Slaughter paced Western Kentucky with 20 points,
all of which came in the second half of play.
ISU will resume play on Sunday, November 29 when
they travel to another Sun Belt foe, Arkansas State. Tipoff is slated for 3:05
p.m. (ET). The game can be heard live on The Crock 92.7FM as well as online at
