CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Indiana State football team fell 62-7 to Northern Iowa in front of 14,860 fans at the UNI-Dome on Saturday evening.
Quarterback Ryan Roberts started his second game of the season for the Sycamores, completing six passes for 60 yards and adding 21 yards on the ground. Antoine Brown totaled 10 rushes for 10 yards, while Bryant Kent led ISU's receivers with a pair of catches for 35 yards.
Gabe Mullane had eight punts, averaging 32.1 yards per kick, including a long of 48 yards. He also pinned the Panthers inside the 20-yard line twice.
Koby Kraemer, in just his second game of the year after a preseason foot injury, returned nine kicks over 154 yards. Kraemer had a game-long of 24 yards, while fellow kick returner Darrius Gates had a long of 22.
CJ Cook led the Sycamore defense with 16 total tackles, with six solo and 10 assisted. Alex Sewall, who did not play last week against Youngstown State, returned to action with 15 tackles, six of which were solo. Both Aaron Archie and Donye McCleskey also reached double figures, posting 12 and 11 tackles, respectively.
UNI wasted no time by striking in its first offensive drive with a touchdown at 11:39, as quarterback Pat Grace hit Schuylar Oordt with a 30-yard pass. The Panthers scored on their next possession, with Carlos Anderson taking the ball in on a one-yard run to go up 14-0. With 4:16 left in the quarter, Ryan Mahaffey caught a two-yard pass from Grace to make it 21-0.
In the second quarter, Grace hit Oordt with a 30-yard strike after a seven-play, 80-yard drive to go up 28-0. Derrick Law then scored back-to-back touchdowns for four and two yards at 9:02 and 2:45, respectively, giving Northern Iowa a 42-0 advantage heading into the locker room.
After the half, UNI chipped in a field goal before defensive tackle Rod Hardy scored ISU's first offensive touchdown since the Sycamores traveled to Louisville on Sept. 5, breaking a streak of 17 straight scoreless quarters. Hardy recovered a fumble at the UNI 11-yard line, then stayed in on offense and rushed for a one-yard touchdown to put ISU on the board at 45-7.
The Panthers added a field goal by Max Martin and two touchdowns to put the game away in the fourth quarter. Matt Strathman stretched out a 49-yard run at 4:02 to make it 55-7, and James Conley intercepted a pass from Roberts and returned it 19 yards with seven minutes remaining for a final tally of 62-7.
After an open week, Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Illinois State. Kickoff in Normal, Ill., is set for 3 p.m.
