Indiana State Sweeps Another Opponent; Three More Qualify For NCAA Indoors

TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? The Indiana State track and field teams remained undefeated in dual meet action on Friday as the Sycamores swept the Illinois State Redbirds at the Terre Haute Indoor Track and Field Double Dual hosted by Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.

 

The Sycamores not only won the men's dual meet 94-56 and the women's dual meet 83-67, Indiana State also had an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Indoor Championships and two more provisional qualifiers to the NCAA's.

 

Indiana State is now 4-0 for both the men's and women's teams in dual meet action.

 

In addition, junior pole vaulter Kylie Hutson (Terre Haute, Ind.) cleared 4.20 meters (13-feet-9.25) to win the pole vault competition and automatically qualify for her third straight NCAA Indoor Championships. The effort also set a new school record.

 

Hutson received All-American recognition in 2008 after finishing 11th at the NCAA's. The Sycamore tied for 15th in her freshman year at the NCAA's.

 

Junior Lauren Martin (Schaumburg, Ill.) became a provisional qualifier in the women's triple jump with a winning leap of 12.70 meters (41-feet-8).

 

Competing in his first meet as a Sycamore, Major Clay (Springfield, Ill.) provisionally qualified in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.15 meters (7-feet-0.5). Clay became eligible at the start of the second semester.

 

Martin, junior Erica Moore (Sullivan, Ind.) and senior Jeanne' Middleton (Indianapolis, Ind.) each picked up a pair of victories as the Sycamores held off the Illinois State Redbirds in the women's meet.

 

Martin also won the long jump with a leap of 5.79 meters (19-feet-0) while Moore won the 60 meter hurdles (8.81) and the 400 meters (56.13). Moore was second in the long jump at 5.55 meters (18-feet-2.5). Middleton posted wins in the 60 meter dash (7.70) and in the 200 meters (25.78).

 

Senior Heather Stembridge (Evansville, Ind.) took first in the mile (5:12.22) while sophomore Kelsey Hanley (Arcadia, Ind.) posted a win in the 20 pound weight throw with a toss of 18.21 meters (59-feet-9).

 

Martin, Mary Kate Conway, Rachel Posey and Moore combined to give ISU another first place finish, taking the 4x400 meter relay in 3:52.93.

 

Freshman Brandon Pounds (Indianapolis, Ind.) posted a pair of wins for the Sycamore men's team, taking the shot put with a toss of 17.44 meters (57-feet-2.25) and the 35 pound weight throw with a toss of 18.13 meters (59-feet-5.75).

 

The Sycamores also won three other field events. Jon Lautzenheiser won the long jump at 6.84 meters (22-feet-5.25), Chauntez Tyus the triple jump at 14.54 meters (47-feet-8.5), and Clay led a 1-2-3 sweep in the high jump. David Bell was second and Curt Sunderland third in the high jump.

 

Jeremiah Vaughan led another 1-2-3 finish for Indiana State in the mile with a winning time of 4:18.12. Scott Keeney was second and Kyle Walsh in the event.

 

Tyken Fulton won the 60 meter hurdles (8.37), Sean Wright the 400 meters (49.19), and Daryl Truitt the 60 meter dash (6.99) and the 200 meters (22.18). Wright, Colton Slack, Gary Ogburn and Anthony Bertoli combined to win the 4x400 meter relay for Indiana State with a time of 3:21.42.

 

Indiana State will compete in the Gene Edmunds Cup, part of the Purdue Triangular, next Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.
