TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ?
Indiana State head women's basketball coach Jim Wiedie announced today (June 24) the promotion of Melanie Boeglin as well as the addition of Cammie Campbell to his coaching staff.
Boeglin spent this past season as a graduate assistant with the Sycamore program while Campbell comes to ISU from Austin Peay where she was a graduate assistant for Lady Governor head coach Carrie Daniels during the 2007-08 campaign.
"Mel has done such a fantastic job in the short time that she's been here," Wiedie commented. "The more that she was around our coaching staff, and the more responsibility that we gave her; it became apparent that she was the best person for the job. She is the best player to ever play here and she is one of the best in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference. Mel understands the league and she understands how good the players have to be in order to be productive in The Valley."
"The biggest thing for us is that she is loyal," Wiedie continued. "She loves Indiana State, she loves this program and she loves this community. It is apparent that she is vested in what we are trying to do here. That is one of the biggest things that separates her from other coaches that we have had in the past, and we are very fortunate to have her on the coaching staff."
Boeglin will assist with the perimeter players and will be responsible for both high school and junior college recruiting. She began her coaching career last season when she joined the Sycamores mid-year as a graduate assistant.
She finished a legendary collegiate career with the Sycamores during the 2005-06 season, helping ISU to a school-record 18-game winning streak and an impressive 27-6 final record. Boeglin led the Sycamores to the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship Game in three of her four seasons in the program.
The school's third all-time leading scorer with a final tally of 1,800 career points, Boeglin captured the school and Missouri Valley records for steals (444) and assists (685) while also setting the school standard for free throws made (576). Her final steals total of 444 was ranked in the Top 20 of the NCAA Division I women's basketball record books when her career was over.
Decorated individually as a player, Boeglin was the first athlete in the Valley to earn both the Jackie Stiles MVC Player of the Year and Prairie Farms MVC Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards in the same season. She also earned MVC Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior and was the first-ever Indiana State women's player to earn both MVC All-Defensive as well as All-MVC honors in each of her four years with the program.
In addition, Boeglin was a member of the MVC All-Freshman team in 2002-03 as she led the Sycamores to the first of two MVC Regular Season Championships under her watch. Boeglin also was a three-time First Team member of the Valley's All-Scholar-Athlete team. She was named Valley Player of the Week a total of eight times, second-most in the history of the league behind only Stiles.
The biggest honors for Boeglin nationally came as a senior on her way to being named an ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American and was an academic all-district selection as both a junior and senior. She was a member of three separate All-American teams, including Kodak/WBCA, The Associated Press and The Sports Network.
Other honors for Boeglin during her career included being the first Indiana State women's basketball player to receive an invitation to attend the WNBA Pre-Draft Camp in 2006; being named to the All-Valley Tournament Team twice; appearing in the Postseason WNIT three times; scoring a career-high 46 points in a double-overtime victory at Drake as a senior, which represented the most points scored by a single-player in one game in the entire nation during the 2005-06 season; dishing out a school-record 19 assists during the same season at Eastern Kentucky, which tied a Valley record and set the NCAA single-game high for that season; and being part of a six-member senior class that drew 6,836 fans to Hulman Center for their final regular-season home contest against Evansville on March 4, 2006.
Boeglin graduated from Indiana State in 2006, and is currently pursing a master's degree.
Campbell comes to ISU from Austin Peay where she was a graduate assistant last year after serving in a similar role during the 06-07 campaign at Western Kentucky. Campbell works with the ISU post players and will be responsible for camps, recruiting, The Sycamore Squad and team travel as well as video exchange.
"Cammie began her collegiate career at Evansville, so she is familiar with The Valley," Wiedie said. "She moved on to Western Kentucky, which is one of the best women's basketball programs in the country. She was able to play there and also work as a member of their coaching staff. The biggest thing that separated Cammie from the rest of the candidates was her personality. Her personality was hands down above and beyond what everyone else showed during the interview process."
Campbell played two seasons as a guard at Western Kentucky after beginning her career at Evansville. While at WKU, she primarily came off the bench but was a sharp-shooter from outside.
She posted a career-high 18 points against East Tennessee as a junior, making 7-of-9 field goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. As a senior, she made 13-of-37 three-point field goal attempts, a 35.1 percentage.
She graduated from Western Kentucky with bachelor's degrees in broadcasting and communication studies in 2007.
At Evansville, Campbell was selected to the Missouri Valley Conference's All-Freshman Team after averaging 7.7 points and dishing out 70 assists during the 2002-03 campaign. That season, she tied an Evansville school record with seven 3-point field goals against Drake. Campbell finished her two-season career with the Purple Aces averaging 5.6 points per game and dishing out 97 assists.
