TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Indiana State faced off against a determined group from Albion College on the newly-named Nellie & John Wooden Court at Hulman Center, but the Sycamores overcame a late Briton lead to earn a hard-fought 69-64 exhibition victory on Saturday night.
In pre-game ceremonies, Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman and ISU President Daniel Bradley helped unveil a pair of handwritten insignias on the court which officially proclaimed the playing surface at Hulman Center, the Nellie & John Wooden Court. Members of the 1947-48 and 1948-49 Indiana State teams, which were coached by Wooden, as well as members of the Hall of Fame coaches' family were present for the ceremony.
On the court, it was Albion that raced out to a quick eight point lead, but the Sycamores were steady and captured a three-point advantage at the half. After Albion gathered a seven point advantage late in the second half, a steal and free throws by Aaron Carter as well as two deep 3-pointers by Rashad Reed helped ISU earn a 69-64 victory.
Reed and Carter paced the Sycamores with 13 points each, as Reed recorded four 3-pointers in the game and Carter found his points with a pair of triples as well as five free throws.
The Sycamores were successful in getting to the free throw line as they connected on 30-of-37 attempts, including a 9-of-10 mark from senior Jay Tunnell. He finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while Isiah Martin tallied 10 points, six blocks and four rebounds.
Indiana State posted an impressive 11 blocked shots in the game and held a 40-29 advantage on the boards. Albion used six 3-pointers in the game and converted 14 points off of 16 ISU turnovers to stay close throughout.
The Sycamores return to action on Friday, November 14 when they host St. Joseph's (Ind.) in the team's second and final exhibition contest.
