Ted Unbehagen Named Sycamore Offensive Line Coach

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - New Indiana State head football coach Trent Miles' first coaching staff continues to take shape this week as today (Jan. 15) he tabbed football icon Ted Unbehagen as the Sycamores' new offensive line coach.

Unbehagen, will be making his second stop with the Sycamore football program, as he also led the Sycamores' offensive line during the 2001 & 2002 seasons. He coached an offensive line unit in 2002 that blocked for quarterback Julian Reese, who posted 2,258 total yards, which still ranks as the third best mark in the history of the program.

"This is a great moment for our program to be able to bring in someone with the experience and success in this profession as Ted Unbehagen," Miles said. "I couldn't think of a finer coach to come in and lead our offensive line unit. The experience of playing for him will benefit the young men in our program for the rest of their lives. You simply can't find a more experienced or knowledgeable coach to join our program in the nation."

Prior to joining the Sycamore football staff for the first time in 2001, he most recently had worked at the University of Houston. As the offensive line boss at Houston in 1997, Unbehagen developed an offensive line unit which paved the way for the Cougar offense to average over 331 yards per game in total offense. The balanced attack saw Houston average 209 yards per contest passing while rushing for an average of 122 yards per outing.

As a 10-year member of the Texas Tech football staff from 1987-96, Unbehagen's charges played a major role in a Red Raider offense which averaged almost 30 points and 400 yards per game.

His coaching career began at Texas A&I in 1964, serving two years before a stint in the military and service in Vietnam. He resumed his coaching career at Houston (TX) Westchester High, where he was offensive coordinator for two years from 1969-70.

Unbehagen then journeyed west for his first term at Texas Tech (1971-74) before becoming offensive line coach and later the offensive coordinator at Rice from 1975-79. Following a single season as offensive line coach at Texas A&M 1980, Unbehagen took over as head coach at his high school alma mater, Galveston Ball, compiling a 35-15-2 record from 1981-85. While at Ball, he coached future NFL star Kimble Anders.

In 1986, Unbehagen joined the staff at the University of Houston, as offensive line coach, before returning to Texas Tech prior to the 1987 campaign.

A native of Galveston, TX, Unbehagen played collegiately at Texas A&I, earning all-Lone Star Conference recognition as a tight end in 1963.

Unbehagen joins Shannon Jackson (defensive coordinator) and Troy Johnson (linebackers) on Miles' first staff so far.
