Short Scrimmage Held As Football Preparations Turn Towards Season Opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - With two weeks of preseason camp now in the books, the Sycamores will now begin to shift their focus towards the season opener at Indiana on September 1. The second week of preseason drills ended with a short scrimmage at Memorial Stadium this morning (August 18).

Senior quarterback Reilly Murphy finished the game by connecting on 8-of-16 passes with a touchdown and an interception. Murphy compiled 99 yards through the air. He also reached the end zone once from a yard out.

Murphy's primary target on the day was senior receiver Brian Jackson, who caught five passes for 75 yards with a touchdown reception. He was on the receiving end of a six-yard pass from Murphy mid-way through the workout.

On the ground, senior Bryan McCulley and Tony West split the carries in the backfield with McCulley amassing 32 yards on six carries while West scratched out 19 yards on six attempts.

Freshman Corey Vandadore connected on his lone PAT attempt. On the second PAT attempt of the day, a low snap forced Varnadore to pick up the ball and make a scrambling toss towards the end zone. His pass was intercepted by the ISU defense to stop the try.

Defensively, the Sycamores continued their strong pre-season camp as senior Warren English-Malone intercepted a Murphy pass in the end zone for the lone ISU turnover of the day.

Jon Goodrich and Michael McQueen each tallied four tackles on the day, while sophomore linebacker Jovan McCray recorded a sack.

Indiana State will hit the practice fields for another week of work, while classes begin on campus Wednesday morning. The Sycamores will hold a final pre-season scrimmage next Saturday, August 25. The workout is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. (ET).

The season opener at Indiana will kick off at 8:00 p.m. (ET) and is slated for coverage on the Big Ten Television Network.
