TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Home has been good to the Indiana State men's basketball team this season and the Sycamores were glad to be back in the confines of the Hulman Center on Saturday, as ISU (4-4) stayed undefeated at home and earned a 59-48 victory over in-state rival Ball State (0-8).
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead, before the Sycamores went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. BSU answered with two quick baskets to regain the lead at 8-5, but a tip-in by Jay Tunnel and a three-pointer by Todd McCoy gave ISU a 10-8 lead with 11:28 left in the half.
BSU tied the game at 10-10 on a Malik Perry jumper with 10:12 left, but Tunnel nailed a three-pointer to give ISU a three-point lead at 13-10. The two teams then battled the rest of the half, with ISU maintaining its lead. Tunnel connected on a jumper with five seconds left in the half to give the Sycamores a four-point advantage at halftime at 24-20. Tunnel finished the half with 10 points and five rebounds for ISU.
The second half began with Ball State hitting its first two shots to tie the game at 24-24. That would be the last time the Cardinals were that close, as the Sycamores went on a 21-5 run, capped off by a Stinson three-pointer to balloon the lead to 45-29 with 8:33 left in the game. Later in the half, BSU cut the lead to 11 points at 53-42 on a Melvin Goins three-pointer with 2:58 left in the game. However, the ISU held on for the rest of the game for the 59-48 win over their in-state rival.
Stinson recorded a game-high 18 points for ISU, including four three-pointers. Tunnel added his second career double-double against the Cardinals, with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead ISU to the victory. Goins led the way for the Cardinals with 17 points in the loss.
ISU will take next week off to prepare for final exams, before heading to New Orleans to face off against Tulane on Monday, December 17.
