SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? Missouri State sprinted out to a 28-0 advantage against Indiana State and did not look back as the Sycamores fell to the Bears 63-7 at Plaster Field on Saturday afternoon. ISU falls to 0-9, 0-4 GFC while the Bears improve to 5-4, 2-3 MVC.
Indiana State defeated the Bears last season at home by a score of 28-22 to break a 24-game losing streak, but could not do the same on the road this season to as the Sycamores' current skid hit 12 games with the loss to Missouri State.
The Bears jumped out to a 21-0 advantage by scoring on each of the first three possessions in the first quarter. After MSU tailback Gerald Davis scored the third of his five rushing touchdowns of the day early in the second quarter to stake the Bears to a 28-0 lead, the Sycamore offense finally reached pay dirt.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Charles Dowdell reached the end zone on a 5-yard rush to cut the MSU lead down to 28-7 with 3:59 left on the clock before halftime. Dowdell's scoring rush capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive.
Missouri State added a pair of scores in the waning minutes of the half to go to the locker room with a 42-7 lead. Included in that late half scoring flurry was Davis' fourth rushing touchdown of the first half ? a 7-yard score with 1:04 left on the clock.
The Bears' Jeron Poole scooped a fumble and returned the ball 43 yards for a touchdown to make it 49-7 early in the third and then MSU added another score with 7:48 left in the frame on a 1-yard TD by Davis, which set a new MSU single-game school record. The scoring rush was his fifth of the day.
Dowdell enjoyed a solid day running the football, gained 78 yards on 17 attempts with a score. He was 8-of-17 passing for 141 yards and a pair of interceptions.
Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, November 3 when they host Youngstown State at Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is set for Noon (EDT).
