TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Indiana State could not stop the Western Kentucky offense on their first seven possessions of the game as the Hilltoppers spoiled the Sycamores' Homecoming with a 56-7 victory at Memorial Stadium.
ISU falls to 0-8 while Western improves to 4-3.
Indiana State scored early in the fourth quarter on a 36-yard pass from Charles Dowdell to Bryan McCulley with 14:51 left in the game. Corey Varnadore booted the extra point.
Western Kentucky scored on their first seven possessions of the game including all six possessions in the opening half of play.
Western Kentucky's alternating quarterbacks scored four of the Hilltoppers' eight touchdowns in the game. K.J. Black scored on runs of 11 yards in the second quarter and three yards in the third while David Wolke scored on runs of one and 15 yards, both in the second quarter.
Tyrell Hayden had a 1-yard touchdown run, Stephen Willis scored from nine yards out and Andrew McCloud went in from five yards, all in the first quarter. Willis also had a six yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
McCulley led the Sycamore rushing attack with 52 yards while Dowdell had 48 and Tony West 42. Dowdell was 5-of-11 passing for 86 yards and a touchdown. He also had two interceptions. Reilly Murphy was 4-of-9 passing for 56 yards. He also threw one interception.
Indiana State had 279 yards of offense but gave up over 500 yards. The Hilltoppers had 510 yards of total offense, 380 yards rushing and 130 passing. Wolke led the Western Kentucky rushing attack with 72 yards.
The Sycamores will be on the road at Missouri State next Saturday (October 27) with kick-off set for 2:30 p.m. (EDT).
