CHARLESTON, Ill. – Indiana State will send most of its men's and women's track & field teams to nearby Eastern Illinois for the annual Big Blue Classic while women's distance runners
Taylor Austin and
Brooke Moore will run in the best distance races in the nation this weekend at the Stanford Invite.
Austin, the defending MVC Outdoor champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, will run in the invite section of the steeple on Friday night at 8:32 p.m. ET. Austin owns the Indiana State school record by nearly 30 seconds at her MVC winning time of 10:17.70 – which ended the regular season ranked No. 20 in the NCAA East Region.
Moore, hot off an indoor season that included taking down indoor records in the mile (4:43.04) and 3K (9:35.60), will set her sights on the 1500 record in the third section of the 1500 at 9:25 p.m. ET on Friday night. Current ISU senior associate AD
Angie Lansing owned the mile record indoors, and her 1500 record still stands at 4:27.92. Austin actually holds the second-best 1500 time in school history at 4:29.47, with Moore having never run a 1500 race at this point in her career.
Moore currently holds 14th best 800-time in the nation after winning the 800 down at Ole Miss last week at 2:09.47 – also the seventh-best in the NCAA East Region at the moment. For her efforts, she was named the MVC Female Track Athlete of the Week.
At Eastern for the scored Big Blue Classic, the Sycamore hurdlers will be looking to improve on what was a strong opening weekend at Ole Miss. Senior
Marcus Neely – a two-time NCAA East Regional qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles and defending MVC Male Track Athlete of the Week – beat out former Sycamore great and Olympian Greggmar Swift for the title last week, winning 14.01 for the win. Neely's time currently ranks 12th nationally and second in the East Region.
Fellow senior
Daley Carter also has a regionally-ranked time at 14.52 (34th), but he will also be triple-dipping this week as he is also running the 400-meter hurdles and on the 4x100-meter relay. Carter was a member of last week's runner-up 4x100 that ran what is now the 48th best time in the East at 41.43.
Also pulling triple duty is All-American senior
Alethia Marrero in the 400-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay. Marrero won the 400 at Ole Miss last week at 55.75 – currently the top time in the Missouri Valley. Marrero owns an all-time best of 57.71 in the 400-meter hurdles, the third-best time in school history.
The action will start in Charleston with the men's hammer, women's shot put and men's long jump at 2:00 p.m. ET.
