OXFORD, Miss. – Indiana State men's and women's track & field opens the outdoor season with a trip to Ole Miss to help dedicate the brand-new, $7.2 million Ole Miss Track & Field Complex at the Joe Walker Invitational this weekend.
The Sycamores are coming off third and fifth place finishes at the MVC Indoor Championships on the women's and men's side, respectively.
Looking to get her senior outdoor season off on the right foot is All-American
Alethia Marrero, who had a very strong comeback season indoors. Marrero, who finished fifth in a historically fast NCAA field in the 800-meter outdoors in 2015, missed the entire 2016 season due to injury. However, Marrero – pushed on by super freshman
Imani Davis – won the 800 indoors to complete her impressive comeback. Davis gave ISU a one-two punch, finishing second for her first-career All-MVC honors.
Marrero and Davis will get the opening week off from the 800, though, with both entered in the 400 alongside teammates
Jamie Newsome and
Imani Hall.
Also looking to extend their indoor season is sophomore star
Brooke Moore, who is in the midst of a torrid second season for the Sycamores. Moore finished third at the MVC Cross Country Championships in the fall for All-MVC honors before dismantling Indiana State's mile (4:43.04) and 3K (9:35.60) records during an incredible indoor season.
Moore will run in the 800 alongside
Aleksey Green and
Brittany Neeley on Saturday.
Sophomore
Cassaundra Roper, hot off an indoor MVC title in the shot put, will look to lead the Sycamore women's throwers this weekend. Roper is entered in the discus, hammer and shot put this weekend.
On the men's side, senior hurdlers
Marcus Neely and
Daley Carter will take their talents to the 110-meter hurdles to make some more history on Saturday. The duo already pushed themselves up the 60-meter list indoors, with Neely moving up to sixth all-time with his MVC winning 7.82 and Carter behind him in eighth at 7.85.
Action is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. ET with Roper in the women's hammer throw.
