Erin Reese breaks Gibson Invite meet record in hammer throw

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Sycamore track and field teams had a strong day one at the Gibson Invitational, while Erin Reese broke the Gibson Invite meet record in the hammer throw despite the cold and snow.

Both the Sycamore men and women sit in first in the team standings after a strong day one of competition. The men lead with 39 points and are ahead of Valparaiso (25), UNI (14), Bradley (8) and Milwaukee (7). The women currently have 50 points, leading UNI (44), Western Michigan (13), IUPUI (6), Valparaiso (2) and Milwaukee (2).

The hammer throw yielded great results for Indiana State on Friday. Erin Reese continued her strong season by breaking the Gibson Invite meet record with a throw of 61.18m (200-09), overtaking Kylee Dobbeleare of Central Michigan from 2016. Reese's mark of 62.34m (204-06) from last weekend is still first in the Valley, fifth in the NCAA East Region and 15th in the country. Jasmine Noel finished third overall in the event at 53.56m (175-09) and is now fifth in the Missouri Valley.

Before Reese took the field, Sam Overton started the day off strong, winning the men's hammer throw with a new career-best mark by over nine feet at 54.65m (179-03). His mark moves him to third in the MVC.

On the track, Ryan Cash and Quentin Pierce were the dynamic duo in the men's 5K. In a race that resulted in a photo finish, Cash crossed the line first with a time of 14:44.05 and Pierce was right next to him at 14:44.06. Both times were personal-bests and they sit at second and third in the conference.

Alli Workman also earned a new lifetime-best in the women's 5K with a time of 17:28.71, which gave her a second place finish in the event. Her teammate, Megan Doty, also placed in the top-three, finishing third at 17:54.62.

Competition resumes tomorrow at noon with the remaining field events, while action on the track will begin at 1:00 p.m.
