DES MOINES, Iowa – The Indiana State track and field teams will head west this weekend to compete at the 109th running of the prestigious Drake Relays.
Â
This Thursday (April 26) through Saturday (April 28), some of the world's best athletes will descend upon Des Moines to compete on the track and in the field, which will feature 57 Olympians/Paralympians. Former Sycamore All-American,
John Mascari, will also be competing this weekend in the men's 10K, an event that he won at Drake in 2013.
Â
Indiana State will be sending some of the top athletes in the NCAA, including four current Sycamores ranked inside national top-50.
Â
Taylor Austin is top among those six athletes, sitting at fourth nationally in the 3000-meter steeplechase. However, this weekend Austin will take on the women's 5K, an event in which she owns the fifth-best time in school history at 17:08.82 from the 2016 MVC Outdoor Championships. Last outdoor season Austin was the MVC runner-up in the 5K at 17:31.37. Austin will also compete as a member of the women's Distance Medley Relay team, where she was a part of the squad that ran the second-best time in school history in 2016 of 11:43.41.
Â
Fellow distance runner,
Brittany Neeley, will compete before Austin in the women's 800-meter run. Last weekend at the Pacesetter Sports Invite, Neeley ran the fifth-fastest time in ISU history, crossing the line at 2:06.91. Her time is first in the conference, 27th in the NCAA East Region and 47th in the country.
Imani Davis will join her in the 800, and she owns 10th-best time in school history of 2:11.26.
Â
On the men's side,
Daley Carter will be looking to replicate the success that former Sycamore All-Americans
Marcus Neely and Adarius Washington have found in the 110-meter hurdles over the past two years. In 2017, Neely earned a third place finish among the nation's best, checking in at 13.77 and in 2016 Washington won the title with a blistering time of 13.40 in the rain, which is third in Sycamore history.
Â
Carter enters the weekend ranked 40th in the country, 31st in the East and second in the conference in the 110-meter hurdles with his top time of 14.04 from the Tiger Track Classic. He will be joined by fellow top-50 athletes Justin Veteto of Purdue (8th NCAA), Illinois' Jonathan Wells (33rd NCAA), Iowa's Chris Douglas (42nd NCAA) and Ohio State's DaJuan Seward (45th NCAA).
Â
Senior high jumper
Jaime Murtagh will be making his third trip to the Drake Relays in the high jump over the weekend. Murtagh is looking to be the first Sycamore to finish in the top-10 at Drake since Major Clay finished second in 2011 in the event. The Irish jumper is having a stellar outdoor season, accentuated by his 2.18m (7-01.75) performance at the Gibson Invitational, which is fourth all-time at Indiana State, 13th in the East Region and 19th in the NCAA.
Â
The Drake Relays have been home to many special moments for the Sycamores throughout the years, including what is perhaps the most memorable title in shuttle hurdle relay from 2001 which featured NCAA Champion Aubrey Herring and current ISU assistant coach
Jeff Martin. They still own the Drake Relays record (and ISU record) at 55.06.
Â
Competition for Indiana State at the 2018 Drake Relays will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET on Thursday night in the Distance Carnival with the women's 800-meter run.
