IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Sycamores continue to battle on day three of the MVC Championships sitting in fourth place with 289 points.
Indiana State continued their outstanding momentum heading into day three, as they competed in a total of six events throughout the morning preliminaries and finals.
"I honestly don't know where to start. This team and program is competing at a new level and our athletes are believing in the process," said head coach
Matt Leach.
Jacquie Price kicked off the day for the Sycamores swimming a 57.47 in the 100 butterfly posting a fourth place finish.
Blanca Saez-Illobre followed up strong with a new ISU school record as she swam a 4:18.67 in the 400 IM. Not only was this time a new record, but has also made her the first in program history to earn an NCAA B cut.
Martina Marks added a solid swim for ISU in the 200 freestyle followed by a new ISU school record from freshman
Megan Schade in the 100 breaststroke as she posted a time of 1:04.55.
Indiana State finished off the morning on yet another high note as
Kendall Hansen posted a fourth place finish with a 55.64 in the 100 backstroke breaking her previous ISU school record.
Following the morning preliminary heats the Sycamores hopped in the ice baths and loaded the bus for a few hours of relaxation at the hotel.
During this break before finals the ISU diving squad got their second chance to show their skills at the MVC.
Both
Laura Fulton and
Mckenzie Plummer showed strong during the 3 meter springboard finals.
Fulton came away with a 172.35 and a 19
th place finish while Plummer added a 124.29 and a 21
st place finish.
"They both did very well today. It's a tough meet, but they gave it their all to end this season and I'm really proud of them! It has only been a few months since they came onto the team, and I really appreciate what they have done for the diving program this first year," said diving coach
Fengting Chen.
After their short rest time ISU was ready to take on the day three finals.
"Everyone stepped up tonight starting off with the 100 flyers and then our 400 IM competitors carried that momentum. Blanca recorded our first NCAA B qualifying time in school history twice during the prelims and finals," said Leach.
Price came out hot for the Sycamores starting out the night shattering her former 100 fly record and posting a fourth place finish with a time of 55.09. Saez-Illobre followed up in the 400 IM with a third place finish.
Marks was next to dive in for the Sycamores as she posted a fifth place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.83. Schade followed with a seventh place finish in the 100 breaststroke and a time of 1:04.46 earning herself an ISU school record.
Hansen ended the individual events of night three breaking her previously held 100 backstroke record with a fourth place finish and time of 55.45 while
Marlene Pavlu Lewin followed closely behind finishing in sixth place while also recording a lifetime best with a time of 56.39.
The Sycamores ended the night with another ISU school record in the 400 medley relay coming from the team of Hansen, Schade, Price and
Alex Malmborg as they posted a time of 3:46.01.
"The other surprises of the night came from our backstroke and breaststroke events as new records were set in each and they helped contribute to the team points. The final event was the 400 med relay and the entire squad stepped up. The team was loud, rowdy and the performances says a lot. Kendall, Megan, Jacquie and Alex broke the school record by six seconds. Now we have one final day of competition and are looking forward to continuing this momentum," said Leach.
Indiana State will wrap up the MVC Championships tomorrow (Feb. 17) with the preliminaries at 11 a.m. (ET) and 5 p.m. (ET).
