IOWA CITY, Iowa – Indiana State continues to battle on day two as they sit in fourth place after tonight's (Feb. 15) finals.
The Sycamores started off the day strong finishing the morning preliminary heats with three school records in three events.
"This morning we swam well above expectations. As the program has grown we have stressed the process and the importance of building upon each session, and so far we have done that," said head coach
Matt Leach.
Cierra Campbell got Indiana State off to a good start in the 500 freestyle as she finished in fifth place with a 4:57.62.
Vivian Kritikou followed closely behind finishing eighth with a 4:59.44.
Indiana State continued to standout in the prelims as
Blanca Saez-Illobre came up big with a second place finish in the 200 IM and a time of 2:02.29.
Megan Schade,
Allie Engstrom,
Katherine Minatra and
Emily Ratliff provided strong swims as well.
The Sycamores finished off the prelims with
Alex Malmborg finishing fifth in the 50 free posting a time of 23.24 and
Marlene Pavlu Lewin with an eighth place finish and a time of 23.57.
Following the preliminary heats the Sycamore divers got their first opportunity to compete at the MVC Championships.
Mckenzie Plummer finished in 21
st with a 159.27 as
Laura Fulton placed 22
nd with a 151.23.
"Mckenzie was very consistent today which was very nice to see. Laura struggled on a couple dives, but overall both showed well against very tough competition. I am pleased with their performance today," said diving coach
Fengting Chen.
After taking a couple hours to rest and recover the Sycamores were back in the water, ready to break more records in the day two finals.
Indiana State went three for three on new school records in the individual events and added another school record in the 200 freestyle relay.
Campbell crushed her preliminary 500 freestyle time by over two seconds as she finished in fourth place with a 4:55.85.
Kritikou also improved her time from the morning session as she finished in eighth place with a 5:00.61.
Following these two impressive performances, Saez-Illobre recorded the highest finish of the night as she placed third in the 200 IM finals with a time of 2:01.95.
Rounding out the individual events was the 50 freestyle.
Malmborg finished in seventh with a 23.30 as Pavlu Lewin trailed right behind with an eighth place finish and a time of 23.66.
Indiana State finished off the night with a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Pavlu Lewin,
Joelle Borchers,
Kendall Hansen and Malmborg posted a 1:34.06 breaking the previous record by over 2.4 seconds.
"The Sycamores had an outstanding finals session.
Cierra Campbell breaking her 500 free record and finishing fourth, Blanca continued to onslaught the record books by finishing third and setting a new record in the 200 IM. In the 50 free we saw Alex and Marlene step up in their first A final, then we ended the night with another record in the 200 free relay. The team is really fighting for every point and I know tomorrow will be another great day for us as we continue to get better," said Leach.
Preliminary rounds will take place tomorrow (Feb. 16) at 12 p.m. (ET) followed by the finals at 7 p.m. (ET).
