IOWA CITY, Iowa – Indiana State swimming and diving finds themselves in a three-way tie for second place after night one of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
After weeks of tough training and months of preparation leading up to this meet the Sycamores officially kicked off their second MVC Championships tonight (Feb. 14) in Iowa City, Iowa.
Night one consisted of only two relay events, the 200 medley and the 800 freestyle.
ISU came off the blocks quick and ready to battle.
The 200 medley relay team of
Kendall Hansen,
Megan Schade,
Jacquie Price and
Alex Malmborg finished in third place with a time of 1:42.54. Not only was this time an impressive opener, but also a new ISU school record.
"This team has worked diligently all year and our student-athletes are ready to compete at a new level. The 200 medley relay was the start we needed as we broke the previous school record by 2.4 seconds. Not only was the race fantastic, but the atmosphere created by our team was outstanding as well," said head coach
Matt Leach.
Indiana State's momentum didn't stop there. The Sycamores kept the ball rolling with two more school records in the 800 freestyle relay.
Martina Marks,
Marlene Pavlu Lewin,
Cierra Campbell and
Blanca Saez-Illobre posted a 7:23.72 shattering the previous record by over 17 seconds.
Marks also added a record over own in the 200 freestyle as she led off with a 1:50.35.
"Our 800 freestyle was amazing. We picked up two more school records and had standout performances all the way through. We will look to continue this momentum into tomorrow's preliminaries and the remainder of the meet," said Leach.
Indiana State will now compete in the preliminary rounds tomorrow (Feb. 15) at 12 p.m. (ET) followed by the finals at 7 p.m. (ET).
