BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana State track and field teams were feeling it on day one of the Gladstein Invite at IU with seven personal-best performances, led by
Taylor Austin in the mile.
Â
"We had a lot of energy today," head coach
Angela Martin said. "It seemed like in every event we had something positive happening and I'm really proud of the efforts. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings."
Â
Austin hit another milestone in her career on Friday, this time passing current senior associate AD
Angie Lansing in the mile to move into second in ISU history. She finished second in the race, but crossed the line at 4:48.29, which overtook Lansing's time of 4:50.12. The only Sycamore in front of Austin now is her teammate
Brooke Moore, who holds the school-record at 4:43.04. Austin currently owns the best time in the Valley and 19th overall time in the NCAA.
Â
In the 60-meter hurdles,
Ayanna Morgan continued to impress, this time improving her third overall time in school history. Morgan claimed victory in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.45, overtaking her previous career-best time of 8.46. She is sitting atop the MVC and is 32nd in the nation.
Â
Junior
Megan Doty put on an impressive performance in the women's 3000-meter run, earning second-place with a new career best at 10:06.24. She overcame her previous best by nearly seven seconds (10:13.05) and now has the fourth overall time in the MVC.
Â
The field also held successes for the Sycamore women. Dayton transfer
Erin Reese etched her name into Indiana State history, finishing second in the weight throw with a mark of 18.96m (62-02.50), good enough for eighth in school history. That mark pushed her into second in the MVC and 35th in the NCAA.
A Sycamore now owns the top mark in the MVC in the pole vault, as
Kim Jackson finished with a mark of 3.70m (12-01.50), a new personal-record. She passed Illinois State's Ariana Cranston who took the top spot last week at the Terre Haute Double Dual.
Â
Tasjia Thomas had a career-best performance in the triple jump, finishing second and recording a mark of 11.73m (38-05.75) which moved her up to sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Â
On the men's side,
Ryan Cash and
Akis Medrano ran stellar races in the 3K. Cash finished second, but earned a new personal-best time of 8:26.30 which is 12 seconds better than his previous best time and second in the MVC. Medrano finished right behind him in third, also recording a new career-best at 8:26.58 and he now has the third-best time in the conference.
Â
Also earning a new personal-best mark was
Hunter Schuman in the weight throw. Schuman picked up a second-place finish in the event and recorded an impressive mark of 18.59m (61-00.00) which moved him into third in the MVC.
