TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State volleyball wraps up a 10-match road swing to begin the 2017 season this weekend at the Chippewa Invitational hosted by Central Michigan. The Sycamores will take on host CMU Friday at 12 p.m. before closing the day with IUPUI at 5 p.m. The Sycamores will wrap up the Invitational with Cleveland State Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
The Sycamores finished last weekend in Iowa City winless after falling to Coastal Carolina, Omaha and Iowa. ISU played two tight matches with Omaha, falling in their second match to the Mavericks Saturday morning 3-2. The team also took the first set from Iowa in a dominant, 25-16 showing before the Hawkeyes closed out the match for the win.
Seven Hills, Ohio native
Sarah Peterson earned Hawkeye Classic All-Tournament Team honors for her performance this past weekend. The outside hitter had 39 kills on a .197 attacking percentage in four matches. Peterson posted her first double-double of the season against Omaha Friday night with 10 kills and 15 digs and three-straight 10-kill matches to close out the weekend.
Redshirt sophomore
Cassie Kawa has been the one of the most efficient offensive threats for the Sycamores through two weekends of play. The Lethbridge, Alberta native has posted a .398 attacking percentage in 21 sets played so far this season. She has finished with eight or more kills in four matches, including a season-best 12 kills against Omaha Saturday.
Junior
Laura Gross earned All-Tournament at the Indiana Invitational during opening weekend finishing with 31 kills and 38 digs. Against DePaul, Gross went for her first double-double of the season on an 18 kill and 19 dig performance. Gross also finished the weekend with a team-best five service aces.
ISU earned its 19th straight AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016 season. The streak is the longest among all schools and ties Drury University (Division II) for the longest streak in the history of the award.
