Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women's soccer faced off with Missouri Valley Conference opponent Missouri State Thursday night at Memorial Stadium, falling to the Bears, 2-1.
Both teams came out with adrenaline pumping in the first half, each looking for their first MVC win in the 2017 season.
The Sycamores (5-5-1, 0-1 MVC) were firing shots from all angles, but could not put many on goal. ISU came away with a total of nine shots in the first half with only two being on frame.
Unfortunately for the Sycamores, this was not the case for Missouri State. While the Bears had an almost equal amount of shots they also had multiple shots on goal throughout the first half of play.
In the ninth minute Missouri State found themselves on a breakaway up the middle of the field. Ashley Coonfield slotted a pass in between two ISU defenders finding the foot of Brooke Prodzinski who shot the ball for a goal. This gave the Bears an early 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later the Bears were at it again when Brooke Zimmerman redirected a shot from Rachel Catrell that had resulted from a scrum inside the Sycamores six yard box off an MSU corner kick.
Despite the two goal deficit Indiana State still continued to battle, trying to make their way back into the game.
The Sycamores continued to throw shots at the Missouri State net and had a new found energy defensively not allowing the Bears to break their backline.
In the 43
rd minute of play the Sycamores earned themselves a goal from a counterattack off an MSU corner kick. Indiana State made their way down field with purpose.
Katie Wells ended up with the ball on the right flank where she slotted a cross into the box and
Tessa Leong slid past two Missouri State defenders to put the ball in the back of the net.
This made the score 2-1 entering halftime.
Starting the second half both teams were evenly matched yet again. Defensively both sides remained strong not allowing much threatening offensive play.
Missouri State only had three shots during the second half while the Sycamores came away with six. Overall Indiana State finished the match with 15 shots and goalkeeper
Brianna Riscossa made six saves.
The Sycamores will be back in action on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium facing off with UMKC. This match will also serve as senior day as ISU honors the 2017 senior class made up of
Kasey Wallace,
Elly Freesmeier and
Casidy Simonis.
