The Indiana State women's golf team hits the links for the second time this fall on Monday and Tuesday, September 18 & 19 when they travel to the Ball State Cardinal Classic. The event will be held at the par-72, 6,204 yard layout of The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind. Two rounds will be played on Monday with the third round scheduled for Tuesday. This is the first 54-hole event of the season for the Sycamores.
Indiana State finished fourth in the season opener at the Roseanne Schwartz Invitational which was held over the Labor Day Holiday. JuniorÂ
Thilda Staubo fired a 76 on the opening day and then came back with a round of 75 on Tuesday to finish with a score of 151 and a tie for 2nd place. The 2nd place finish for Staubo was the best of career and she took home Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honors for her effort. SophomoreÂ
Sierra Hargens, who was second overall in this event one year ago, tallied a pair of 78's this year and finished with a score of 156 and a tie for 14th place.
At the Cardinal Classic, the Sycamores will use the lineup of Staubo, Hargens,
Sophie Benetti,
Robyn Blanchard and
Alex Jennings. Benetti showed marked improvement in her first tournament, trimming 12 shots off her score during the Tuesday round as she followed her 86 on Monday with a impressive 74 in the second round. Her total of 160 jumped her 23 places on the leaderboard up to a tie for 20th place. Also at YSU,Â
Robyn Blanchard posted a round of 85 (following a 78 on Monday) on the second day and fell into a tie for 29th place whileÂ
Alex Jennings carded a round of 81 and her two-day score of 166 was tied for 41st.
"This week we face a 19 team field with some of the best from the Midwest including several MVC teams and the preseason favorite Bradley as well as Southern Illinois," head coach
Greg Towne commented. "
Dawn Turner is still recovering from an illness and will not be available. What we have worked on this week is to not micro manage our golf game. Accept the misses and move on to our Macro view of being able to compete at a national level. I have a really good feeling about this group, they are showing some tremendous teamwork and love for each other."
This year's field features: host Ball State, Akron, Austin Peay, Bowling Green, Bradley, Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Dayton, Drake, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indiana State, Indianapolis, Northern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Southern Illinois, Toledo, Western Illinois and Western Michigan. Indiana will have individuals competing.
The first round begins at 8:30 am (ET) on Monday with a shotgun start. The Sycamores are paired with Evansville, Indianapolis and Indiana. The third and final round will be held on Tuesday beginning at 9:00 am. Live results are available on GoSycamores.com.
